Your New role

At National Highways, we have an exciting opportunity for Engineers to join our teams based in the Midlands. This role will involve hybrid working, and the office locations would be Birmingham, Nottingham or Telford. We’re recruiting across different disciplinesincluding Pavement, Technology, Design and Structures.

The role may be required to work unsociable hours. You will be required to drive as part of your role and will need to have a full clean driving license to be considered for this position and during employment.

What you’ll be leading on

Ensuring the health and safety needs and wellbeing of customers and employees are fully considered and accounted for throughout the planning and delivery of each service activity.
Undertaking the identification and evaluation of asset data and needs in order to develop early solutions, in line with agreed methodologies and prioritisation criteria.
Develop early solutions for improvements and/or renewals, including the compiling of relevant documents, evidence and options for value management, taking into account new techniques, materials, buildability and costs.
Monitor the delivery of agreed early solutions and plans, liaising with the relevant teams to identify and/or rectify issues.
Ensure that asset data and condition information is captured and maintained in the relevant databases, in line with agreed standards and timescales.
Identify, prepare briefs and manage delivery of survey works that support the improvement and/or renewal of assets.
Develop the technical briefs provided to the design and construction contractor for improvement and renewals work.
Provide technical support to Project Managers by assisting with materials approvals, vetting of contractors’ compliance, inspection support on site, and reviewing health and safety files.
Undertake reviews of third-party designs for compliance to standards, design briefs and design for maintenance requirements.
Assist with developing the regions asset led forward programme and initial scheme development delivers customer centric designs and technical specifications.
Recommend improvements in the development of asset management processes and approaches.
To be Successful

Degree or HND in relevant discipline and appropriate experience, or equivalent
Membership of professional body (desirable) or working towards Membership (essential)
Experience in highway infrastructure design and in relevant construction and delivery methods
Knowledge of asset condition assessment and degradation modelling
Understanding of the Value Management process or cost benefit analysis schemes
Experience working with budgets including the creation of a budget for scheme development
Knowledge of CDM 2015 and experience in AutoCAD (desirable)
Good stakeholder management and communication skills
Strong customer focus
Understanding of asset management decision making
Engineering Disciplines we are recruiting to:
Pavements - This team leads the Midlands in the prioritisation and development of Pavement (Carriageway and Footway) and Road Marking Asset Needs, identifying the key needs of the asset and providing a technical lead to the rest of the Region. They alsolead on the Asset Management approach for these assets.

Technology - The Technology team is responsible for the identification of asset needs and the development of early solutions across the Strategic Road Network in the East and West Midlands. Typical work can range from preliminary design, feasibility studies,consultation with major projects and design verification. The team has recently expanded to meet the growing need for Technology expertise in the region.
