**Job Title**: Associate Specialist in Emergency Medicine (Locum)
**Duration**: Long-term (e.g., 6-12 months, with potential for extension)
**Hours**: Full-time / Part-time / On-call as required
**Reports to**: Clinical Lead / Consultant in Emergency Medicine
**Job Summary**:
**Key Responsibilities**:
- Provide expert clinical care in the Emergency Department, including assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients presenting with a wide range of emergency conditions.
- Manage acute medical, surgical, trauma, and paediatric emergencies, ensuring rapid and effective intervention.
- Perform a wide range of emergency procedures, such as airway management, advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), trauma resuscitation, and minor surgical procedures.
- Supervise and support junior doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring the delivery of safe and effective patient care.
- Lead resuscitation and trauma teams, coordinating care during critical incidents and complex cases.
- Participate in the on-call rota, providing out-of-hours emergency cover as required.
- Engage in decision-making and planning for the discharge, admission, or referral of patients, in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
- Provide leadership in clinical governance activities, including participation in audits, quality improvement initiatives, and risk management.
- Contribute to the teaching and training of junior medical staff, medical students, and allied health professionals within the department.
- Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient care, maintaining high standards in line with NHS Trust policies and clinical guidelines.
- Actively participate in departmental meetings, case reviews, and clinical handovers to ensure continuity of care.
- Support the development and implementation of clinical protocols, guidelines, and service improvements in the Emergency Department.
**Essential Qualifications**:
- MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
- Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) with a license to practice.
- At least 7 years of postgraduate experience in Emergency Medicine or related acute specialties.
- Relevant postgraduate qualifications such as MRCEM, FRCEM, or equivalent.
- Advanced Life Support (ALS) certification or equivalent; additional certifications in Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Paediatric Life Support (APLS/PALS), or equivalent are highly desirable.
**Skills and Experience**:
- Extensive experience in managing a broad range of emergency presentations, including major trauma, cardiac emergencies, acute medical, and surgical conditions.
- Proficiency in emergency procedures, including airway management, suturing, fracture reduction, and the use of ultrasound in emergency care.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to manage and direct resuscitation teams and multidisciplinary groups in high-pressure situations.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact effectively with patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
- Experience in clinical governance, including participation in audits, quality improvement projects, and clinical risk management.
- Ability to work efficiently under pressure, prioritize tasks, and make sound clinical decisions in a fast-paced environment.
**Desirable Qualifications**:
- Specialist interest or additional training in areas such as Trauma, Toxicology, Paediatrics, or Ultrasound in Emergency Medicine.
- Experience in research, clinical trials, or publication in emergency medicine journals.
- Previous experience working within the NHS or a similar healthcare system.
