Collections & House Officer
Are you someone who cares deeply about achieving high standards, and helping to make beauty and history accessible to all? If so, you could become a Collections and House Officer, bringing to life the history and significance of this much-loved place.
**Accommodation is provided to the postholder for the proper or better performance of their duties in accordance with Trust criteria and HMRC rules.**
We’re currently undertaking our pay review process and it is likely that this salary will be increased from 1st April 2025.
What it's like to work here:You’ll be part of the on-site housed team playing a major part in security and emergency response for the property. You'll work 37.5 hours per week on a shared rota of weekends and on-call, out of hours, duty. Wallington is open all year and the house is currently open for around 41 weeks, 11:30am-3:30pm, 7 days a week.
You'll immerse yourself in the day to day running of the historic house, managing your team and supervising great service delivery, as well as seeking to ensure that this beautiful Northumberland country house is protected and safe whilst in their care as a keyholder.
Working closely with the Senior Collections and House Officer to build a strong relationship, you’ll share thoughts, plans and ideas but also capably deliver agreed asks and objectives, being an advocate for their leadership across the property.
What you'll be doing:Reporting to the Senior Collections and House Officer, you'll lead a team of three Collections Assistants to implement conservation routines, preventative conservation and cleaning programmes. Working together you’ll ensure the collection is in safe hands and plan a program of visitor engagement, to share the work you do with the widest possible audience. You’ll welcome everyone into the house and bring to life the stories of the people connected to Wallington and the objects in your care.
With around 75,000 visitors to the house each year, you’ll play an important role in balancing their experience and enjoyment with the safeguarding of the collection for future generations. Demonstrating this link between enjoyment and conservation through engagement will be high on your list of priorities. You'll support and manage the service team, including volunteers, by compiling duty rotas and providing up to date information and training in order to deliver a high-quality experience. You’ll encourage the Collections Assistants and volunteers to involve and engage visitors, wherever possible, as they carry out their conservation work, bringing Wallington to life in front of the public.
You’ll collaborate with outdoor colleagues to understand the importance of the wider estate in connection to the house, and the links through generations of Wallington’s owners. This fascinating connection is something you’ll grow to understand and explore as part of your work here.
