The nursing assistant / assistant practitioner is a member of the Upper GI Physiology Service professional team appointed to support physiologists and administrative members in the delivery of direct or indirect patient care.

The post holder will undertake a range of activities under the supervision of senior physiologists, having been assessed and deemed competent in the activities required. This role at this department will provide in depth knowledge and experience of gastrointestinal physiology assessments. Examples of GI physiology assessments are: high resolution manometry of oesophagus, impedance-pH reflux monitoring, wireless reflux monitoring, Hydrogen-Methane breath testing.

Therefore, this opportunity can be an ideal choice for individuals willing to explore a career path towards becoming a GI Physiologist. Appointment to this position does not automatically entitle the post holder to proceed with the required trainings.

Whilst we will provide support and relevant training as much as possible, the department will not be liable to amend the duties of the post holder in order to accommodate external training.

Rota between other assistant practitioner in day to day running of all types of physiology tests provided in this department. This Rota-based system enables all our staff to learn and maintain their knowledge on all aspects of the work. It is important to note that a full support will be provided to new staff to make sure they will be fully compliant with the tasks required before working independently. Since the staff also undertake the administrative tasks related to the clinics, they will also enhance their skills making them a well-rounded person capable of all the tasks required for running the service.

This upper GI physiology service is one of the most reputable units of its kind in the UK. there is a long history of research and pioneering in the field in this department being one of the first hospitals acquiring latest GI physiology technologies amongst the teaching hospitals in the country. Therefore, often we receive referrals from other tertiary hospitals to provide our input on the assessments. to maintain the same reputation and quality of work we are eager to employ the best team we can and we provide our staff members thoroughly both clinically and scientifically.
1. Provide clinical and non clinical support to the Multi Professional team under the direction of the senior physiologists.
2. Support the delivery of effective healthcare to patients/ service users by undertaking duties as identified by the Multi Professional Team.
3. Undertake specified and unsupervised aspects of testing procedures and interventions as delegated by the senior physiologists within an agreed protocol, sphere of responsibility and after sufficient training.
4. Assist the senior physiologists by assessing and documenting care, providing verbal and written reports and performing basic analysis of the data in an effective and safe manner.
1. Clean and sterilise/dispose equipment as per protocols and maintaining and cleaning equipments used
2. Maintaining treatment rooms stocking and rotating items as required
3. Chaperoning and assisting patients who are being tested by another clinician
4. Maintain tidiness and cleanliness of all clinical and non-clinical rooms at the site of the labs
5. Ordering of consumables to maintain stock levels
6. Participation in administrative works as well as taking phone calls
7. At all times there will be a need to maintain accurate records
8. Advise the team of potential problems or errors within the range of the service
9. Learn the clinical and non-clinical skills required for the effective delivery of the delegated duties
10. Taking rota as required by the team needs in different sites within the Trust that the activities of the labs are requested.
11. Participate in Clinical Supervision and act as a supervisor /mentor for those in similar role.
12. Maintain healthy working relationships with the Multi Professional Team, patients and users of the service.
13. Participate in research activities as and when required
14. To escort stable patients to and from all wards and departments within the hospital if required
15. Carry out duties consistent with individual patient / users wishes, maintaining privacy, dignity and recognising cultural diversity and needs.
16. Triage the referral letter for the appropriate tests.
