**ACADEMIC AND RESEARCH**

We are the world’s largest university press. That means we serve the academic community as no other publisher can. We work in partnership with institutions and learned societies to bring a world of knowledge to the fingertips of students and researchers worldwide.

The goal is impact. Together with our academic communities, we curate and seamlessly connect together the ideas that push their fields forward, so they can learn from them, add to them, and continue a virtuous cycle of scholarship.

And because we are a part of the academic community and guided in everything we do by our mission, we re-invest in our people, our publishing, and the world-leading research institution of which we are part.

**ABOUT THE ROLE**

The Oxford Dictionary of National Biography (ODNB) is a research project of Oxford University, supported and published by Oxford University Press. Its General Editor is Professor Sir David Cannadine. As our new Research Editor, you will be responsible for commissioning and editing ODNB articles; for managing a network of advisers and contributors; and for co-ordinating ODNB material from idea stage to publication, under the overall supervision of the General Editor, working closely with OUP colleagues and external suppliers to ensure quality and impact.

Duties will include:

- On the basis of advice from a large network of advisers, and their own research and awareness of current scholarship, recommend topics for future inclusion
- Identify and manage this large network of specialist advisers; co-ordinate the work of advisers suggesting new entries and contributors
- Edit submitted articles both for style and for content, revising and supplementing where necessary
- Revise and update existing content on the basis of new scholarship, or new availability of primary source material
- Use a range of resources to research and verify data supplied
- Work closely with other members of the in-house OUP editorial team to ensure timely and high quality content is ready to publish in alignment with overall strategy
- Engage with the readership of the ODNB by responding to queries from the general public or contributors, which may result in changes or additions to published content
- Contribute to editorial activity in areas of publicity and public engagement
- Contribute to strategy for publicity and outreach surrounding new updates to content, or on topical events, including writing articles and press releases, co-ordinating with publicity and marketing staff at OUP
- Outreach to academic and national institutions to develop partnerships on data and linking

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

**ABOUT YOU**
- Excellent research, writing, and editing skills
- High level of aptitude for complex systems for workflow tracking, data management and storage
- The ability to work effectively as part of a small team, as well as self-motivation
- A background in British history with a modern specialism

Please note, this is a 1 year fixed term contract.
