An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our Fisheries, Biodiversity and Geomorphology Team as a Biodiversity Technical Officer.
- Working as part of a dedicated group you'll support sustainable development, build ecological resilience to climate change, assess the ecological impacts of projects and wherever possible ensure biodiversity net gain is achieved.
- Our team covers the River Great Ouse catchment and you will based at our Brampton Office in Cambridgeshire.
- In this role you'll be providing technical advice and guidance, assessing ecological risks and identifying opportunities in all aspects of the Environment Agency’s work.- Those with a passion for the following are encouraged to apply:
- Protecting vulnerable wildlife populations, via a range of exciting species and habitat conservation projects
- Providing advice on how to protect and enhance ecology affected by development or maintenance activities
- Collaboration and working in partnerships
- Influencing nationally significant infrastructure projects
- Making our natural environment more accessible and socially inclusive for everyoneThe team
- We cover a large area comprising of the River Great Ouse catchment from Brackley in Buckinghamshire to The Wash in Norfolk with numerous nationally and internationally important wildlife sites and the unique landscape of the Fens.
- You will bring your expertise to a friendly, vibrant team of environmental professionals; your skills will complement our fisheries and geomorphology expertise.
- We work in partnership both internally and externally to advise on environmental impacts and improvements.Experience/skills required
- You will be an ecologist, or naturalist, qualified to degree level (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, and be a:
- Confident communicator
- Enthusiastic with excellent influencing and negotiating skills
- Able to interpret complex technical issues into pragmatic, clear and compelling advice and operational decision making

You’ll be able to demonstrate your ecological expertise and practical experience of the following:
- Ecological requirements of freshwater habitats and species
- Surveying for protected species
- River restoration and enhancement techniques
- Wetland habitat management
- Designing and implementing mitigation/compensation and nature-based solutions
- Contributing to scoping and reviewing Strategic Environmental Assessments, Appropriate Assessments, Environmental Impact Assessments and Water Framework Directive assessments
- Town and Country Planning and Marine Planning and regulation processes
- Government policy and strategy e.g. Natural Capital and Biodiversity Net Gain
- Membership of a relevant professional institute
