Metal Workshop Co-ordinator

The Workshop Coordinator is responsible for planning, organising and supervising the Metal Workshop. The workshop provides meaningful vocational work and skill development opportunities for up to 7 adults with special needs at any one time. Overall, the Metal Workshop facilitates an inclusive working environment for the production of items made of metal which are sold in our Gift Shop, online and at Craft Fairs.
**Main Overall Responsibilities.**
- To familiarise oneself with the Community's “Guiding Vision Statement”.
- Adhere at all times to Newton Dee's Policies and Procedures, paying particular attention to those regarding Welfare and Health and Safety of the Villagers.
- Represent Newton Dee's ethos and values to parents, carers, authorities, visitors and any other enquirers.
- Ensure that all necessary records and record keeping is maintained on a daily, weekly and monthly basis.
- To lead a stimulating, considerate and friendly working atmosphere that is supportive and pleasant for everyone working in the Metal Workshop.
- To train, advise and support villagers in their skill, social and personal development through metalwork.
- To allocate meaningful tasks which will allow villagers to fulfil their potential and vocational identity as a metal worker.
- To supervise short-term co-workers and volunteers.
- To attend all meetings deemed appropriate and necessary.
- To undertake management tasks in order to develop and maintain a high quality service as required by the statutory authorities and Newton Dee.
**Day-to-day running**:
- Providing necessary support for occupational, social and welfare needs.
- Resolving issues and differences appropriately.
- Initiating changes and improvements.
- Health and Safety in the Metal Workshop, recording accidents and incidents.
- Support and supervision of villagers, co-workers and volunteers.
- Liaison with relevant groups. i.e. Welfare Group, HR Group.
- Attend Reviews, Workplace Group and Budget Holders meetings.
- Arrange building maintenance, renewals and repairs.
- Attend and participate in training courses as required by Newton Dee
**SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS**
- Ensuring and maintaining a clean and safe working environment.
- Organise, supervise and actively support between 5-7 villagers in carrying out a wide range of tasks in the process of producing jewellery, ornaments, seasonal decorations, tools and other items hand crafted from copper, brass, other metals and materials.
- Be aware of welfare needs of villagers, liaise with Welfare Group and House Co-ordinators, report concerns and help where appropriate.
- Attending villager and co-worker reviews as required.
- Providing support and supervision in the workplace.
- Collaborate with other workshops and workshop coordinators.
- Supporting the Craft Workshops of Newton Dee to increase their online presence and sales via an online sales platform for arts and crafts.
**REQUIRED SKILLS**
- Experience in working with metal such as jewellery making, black smithing and crafts based on the material metal.
**ESSENTIAL QUALITIES**
- At least 1 year of experience of work with adults with learning disabilities (or other vulnerable groups) in an arts and craft setting.
- Empathetic ability to interact and work with people with learning disabilities.
- An evident understanding and support for Newton Dee’s ethos and values.
- Strong team working principles and practice.
- A friendly and personable manner and good communication skills.
- Have a real interest in working with people with learning disabilities.
- Be practical and hardworking, organised and approachable, able to motivate self and others, have a caring attitude towards co-workers and villagers, and be flexible and adaptable.
- Experience and knowledge of selling handmade arts and crafts online, inventory management, payment processing and advertisement.
**DESIRABLE QUALITIES**:
- Prior knowledge or experience of Camphill/Rudolf Steiner organisations.
- Previous experience working in a Voluntary or International organisation.
- Excellent design skills.
- Relevant training in health and safety, marketing and online sales.
Hours: Monday to Thursday 8.45am-5pm and Friday 9am-4pm with a one hour unpaid lunch break each day.
This is a temporary position, starting on the 31st of March 2025 and ending on the 30th of September 2026 (18 months).
