Bereavement Records Officer

Bournemouth, United Kingdom BCP Council Full time

We have an exciting new opportunity for a committed individual to join our friendly and hardworking Bereavement Care Team. This new post has been created to assist with the verification and preparation of burial records and grave purchase records contained within the handwritten statutory registers going back as far as the mid-nineteenth century, together with digital records maintained within the legacy software systems. This work will be pivotal in migrating accurate data to the new bereavement software system and help towards delivering a first-class bereavement records service, with a longer-term view to providing online public access to burial records.

Primarily based at the Bereavement Care Offices in North Cemetery, Strouden Avenue, Bournemouth BH8 9HX you will be responsible for developing a records system which supports the management, systematic and efficient verification and control of the recording, storage, access and destruction of bereavement records (both paper and digital) alongside the transactions associated within the statutory framework for burials and grave purchases. This will include responsibility for processing new burial bookings and registrations using the new software system.

You will be educated to at least ‘A’ level standard (or equivalent), you’ll have experience of record-keeping and an understanding of records management principles and practices, with good ICT and communication skills. You should also be able to work effectively within a team delivering administrative support in a busy and highly pressurised office environment.

You will also assist the Bereavement Care Team with general enquiries relating to genealogy searches and access to archived burial records, and provide cover during staff absences on cremation bookings and the processing of paperwork.

A resilient individual, you will have the ability to maintain concentration over prolonged periods with repetitive and monotonous tasks when entering/checking data or undertaking research and manage sensitive information securely. You will have the ability to take an organised approach to your own workload, with good attention to detail and be able to work individually and as part of a team.

You will be committed to achieving and maintaining standards of excellence ensuring a customer focussed approach, and willing to advocate service changes leading to improvements.
