The team at the Royal Orthopaedic NHS Foundation Trust provides a holistic approach when caring for a wide range of patients with complex musculoskeletal, spinal and oncology conditions, many of whom require high dependency care.

As one of the country’s few Elective Orthopaedic Specialist Hospitals, ‘The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital’ receives referrals & transfers only and therefore has no ‘Emergency Department’. This allows our nurses & ODPs to focus their attention on the delivery of truly holistic and patient centered care.

With multi-professional team working we are continually enhancing the patient journey and experience with high quality, evidence-based care delivery. To assist the Band 7 Lead Practitioner in the responsibility of the delivery, standards and management of patient care within the Theatre. To provide guidance, support and clinical leadership to the Theatre team, while working closely with the Band 7 Lead Practitioner to ensure effective use of Theatre resources.

**JOB PURPOSE**:
To assist the Band 7 Lead Practitioner in the responsibility of the delivery, standards and management of patient care within the Theatre. To provide guidance, support and clinical leadership to the Theatre team, while working closely with the Band 7 Lead Practitioner to ensure effective use of Theatre resources.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. OBJECTIVES OF THE POST

1.1 Provide assistance to the anaesthetic team either as anaesthetic practitioners, advanced scrub practitioners, scrub or circulating nurse and to recover patients without supervision.

1.2 Provide clinical and professional advice and support for members of the theatre team, being the lead member of the theatre team.

1.3 Be responsible for leading a team and providing skilled assistance to the surgeons and/or anaesthetist.

1.4 To assist and deputise for the Band 7 Lead Practitioner, ensuring efficient management of a theatre area.

1.5 Develop and maintain a safe quality service that will continually strive for improvement.

1.6 To maintain and develop professional knowledge and competence.

2. PATIENT CARE

2.1 To assess, plan and implement individualised patient care.

2.2 Ensure best practice in care delivery and monitor this using current standards; for example patient safety, safeguarding concerns or poor practice.

2.3 To provide skilled assistance to the team either in the anaesthetic or theatre area ensuring that all theatre and Trust policies and procedures are adhered to.

2.4 Assist in safety checks to ensure the correct patient has the correct procedure as laid down in the WHO (World Health Organisation) Safety Checklist.

2.5 Ensure electronic record keeping and paper records are maintained in line with Trusts Information Governance policies, clinical record keeping and professional regulatory requirements.

2.6 To maintain, review and improve standards and practices based on evidence based findings.

2.7 Inter-professional working to ensure patients care needs are met.

3. MANAGEMENT

3.1 To be responsible for the efficient management of the theatre and theatre team as allocated by the Band 7 Lead Practitioner including the running of lists, safe staffing and start times.

3.2 To ensure effective communication with medical staff, heads of departments and nursing/ODP staff.
