Asempa Limited is a specialist provider of information on Africa, headquartered in London, UK with a branch in the village of Reach, near Cambridge. Our principle business is publishing a specialist newsletter called Africa Confidential. It has a strong reputation, launched back in 1960 and is financed purely from subscriptions. It carries no advertising. Our niche is in political risk and economics, and we cover the entire continent. We analyse the implications of events or appointments as opposed to providing a news service.
A new and exciting opportunity has become available for a business administration apprentice. We are looking for an enthusiastic and reliable person to work within our company. To provide administration support to the team producing a long-established newsletter called Africa Confidential. To assist the Subscriptions Manager with renewals, retention issues, payments, and digital access issues; and to assist the Sales and Marketing manager with all aspects of developing new business interest.
**Apprenticeship summary**
- Monday - Friday Shifts TBC
- Total hours per week: 30 hours a week
- Annual Wage: £9,100
- The salary is £175 per week, supplemented by a bonus scheme tied to monthly team performance. The hourly wage will rise to £6.40 in April and will subsequently increase to the National Minimum Wage (NMW) after the first year.

**What will the apprentice be doing?**
Baseline
- General office support
- Answering the phone
- Helping with franking posts on occasion
Mainline role
- Helping to manage the subscription database
- Ensuring a renewable rate as high as possible year on year
- They will be taught how to use the database and the different elements of sign-ups and alerts sent out to subscribers
- They will also learn about Internet Protocol recognition for digital licences that increasingly are taking over from traditional subscriptions
Our subscribers can be broadly described as being 30% corporate, 35% diplomatic/international organisation; 20% academic institutions; 10% Non-Governmental Organisations/charities; and 5% organisations from across the globe.
As time moves on and they gain an understanding of the role, there will then be ample scope to widen their involvement into areas such as digital marketing; strategic market planning, negotiating conference media partnerships; and assisting with the general marketing and sales.
**What training will the apprentice take and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?**
- A Business Administrator Level 3 (A Level) Standard qualification which will include, if necessary, Functional Skills in maths and English to attain Level 2, equivalent of GCSE Grade C/4
**What is the expected career progression after this apprenticeship?**

**Qualifications/Desired qualities**
- GCSE or equivalent Maths and English (Grade C/4 or above) essential
- Ideally to A level, with a demonstrable strength in English and Maths. But most important is a positive manner and a willingness to learn quickly on the job. The right applicant will quickly find themselves being given responsibility for important tasks. Constant learning
**Specific requirements**
The successful applicant needs to be IT savvy. They will be expected to use Microsoft Word and Excel, and also a database called Filemaker Pro (with training if required). Good aptitude to English writing and mathematics, and personable on the phone.
