The acute oncology team are looking to recruit an additional CNS to join our expanding team. This exciting opportunity has arisen as we have been successful in obtaining transformation funding to develop a cancer vague symptoms pathway. As a result of this development we are looking for a motivated and reliable person with excellent clinical skills to assess and support patients who present with toxicities from treatment, advancing symptoms from disease progression and presentation of new cancers through our emergency department. Additionally, you will provide support for a small group of patients who have brain cancer.

The post holder will be a key member of the acute oncology team with an opportunity to demonstrate leadership, innovation, negotiation, teaching and most importantly extensive experience in the care of oncology patients and managing their acute needs. The post holder will have the ability to work under pressure, be keen to face challenges, be well organised and enthusiastic, possess good IT skills, excellent communication skills and be able to work as an effective member of a multidisciplinary team. You should have attained post registration in a cancer related area and the advanced assessment skills course.

Working with colleagues across the 2 hospital sites of the Trust, this post is focused on the implementation, delivery and development of the acute oncology service (AOS). The aim of this post is to improve the care of cancer patients admitted to London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust either due to complications of cancer diagnosis and or its treatment or those admitted to the trust as an emergency with a high suspicion of a new cancer diagnosis. Additionally, the post holder will carry a small case load for patients with brain cancer.

The post holders will work with the Macmillan Senior Clinical Nurse Specialist (AOS) enabling:

- Timely care of patients with complications of cancer treatment (early recognition, access to appropriate treatment, early discharge)
- Improved care of patients with complications of cancer diagnosis (early recognition, better treatment, rapid referral back to specialist teams)
- Appropriate investigation of patients who might benefit from treatment for malignancy of unknown primary (targeted investigations, rapid triage of patients into specialist oncology or palliative care)
- Support the acute diagnostic oncology clinic in the absence of the AOS CNS.

You will work autonomously assessing and triaging patients in your caseload ensuring this reflects the core components of the Clinical Nurse Specialist role, which involves high level of clinical decision making and advanced clinical practice. With training, you will be expected to provide detailed advice to other specialties, advising the multidisciplinary team on the appropriate management of acutely unwell cancer patients.
