Stakeholder and industry relevant work in the School and Marine Centre Wales has used fundamental understanding to guide applied areas of research such as Marine Renewable Energy, fisheries & aquaculture, improved weather forecasting, flood risk assessment and coastal defence.
The School currently offers 10 undergraduate programmes, 6 MSci. programmes and 5 postgraduate taught programmes across the marine sciences with further programmes under development.
The Project
The Sustainable Fisheries Team at Bangor University has a long record of accomplishment in fisheries science, and management advice within UK and especially Welsh fisheries. The philosophy of the research has always been to undertake research collaboratively and participatory with stakeholders, particularly fishers themselves.
Over the last few years, increased collaboration with managers has also ensured that the research can be increasingly used within policy. Fisheries research and management is a complex socio-ecological problem and the integration of increased socio-economic expertise is seen as an important step towards fully sustainable fisheries.Over the last two decades, in order to manage and monitor fish stocks within an ecosystem based framework, there has been a rapid increase in research into fisheries indicators and how they relate to the stock and the wider ecosystem. More recently there has also been an increase in research into the sensitivity of these indicators to respond to changes at both the fished stock level and the ecosystem level. However, much of this research has been carried out on finfish stocks that are data rich. There has been much less research on data poor species such as shellfish and therefore the selection of indicators and their sensitivity to fishing effort and wider ecosystem status is not well understood.
