Internal Redeployment Only - Teaching Associate

Cardiff University School of Social Sciences is seeking to recruit a Teaching Associate to support our Undergraduate students in their learning. The main duty is to undertake seminars, tutorials and group work and to mark and give feedback on students' work. You may also be required to supervise student projects and carry out teaching-related administrative duties. Training and career development opportunities are provided. Teaching contributions are within an agreed programme of content overseen by module leaders.
 
The contract is equivalent to approx. 0.3 of a full-time post (10.5 hours), available immediately and fixed term until 31st August 2027. The time commitment for the role will vary over the year, and the postholder would expect to work more intensively during teaching and assessment periods. You would therefore need to commit to being available during University Semester time (teaching takes place mid-September to mid-June) and to undertake marking during assessment periods in December, January, May and June (with some limited additional assessment in mid-August).
 
Salary: £33,951 - £36,636 per annum, pro rata for part time hours (Grade 5), with annual increments up to final salary at top of grade) New appointments are usually made at the starting point of the salary scale.

Key Duties
  • Deliver teaching courses.  Includes preparing teaching material, communicating subject matter and encouraging critical discourse to develop rational thinking; observing and reacting to student. interventions; responding to questions outside class times and to contingencies in course delivery.
  • Carry out pre-determined assessment for courses, including marking and providing written/oral feedback; and collating and providing final assessments of students.
  • Supervise undergraduate and possibly Masters project students.
  • Participate actively as a member of a teaching team.
  • Carry out course evaluation, including facilitating student feedback; reflecting on own teaching design and delivery; and implementing ideas for improving own performance.
  • Carry out administrative duties such as class record keeping, attending meetings, and report writing.
  • Undertake teaching-related and administrative work as allocated by the Head of Department and various Committees and within a clear and established programme with assistance and support.
  • Plan and prioritise own daily work, and forward plan for some teaching.
  • Deal with reactive requests such as those relating to teaching, supervising students and administrative tasks, on a daily basis.
General Duties

Cardiff University School of Social Sciences
The School of Social Sciences is an internationally recognised centre of excellence in research and teaching across a range of subject areas, including Social Policy, Sociology, Criminology, Education, Social Psychology, and Social Work.

We deliver a substantial programme of research, both fundamental and strategic, funded by ESRC, AHRC, MRC, charitable foundations, the European Union, Central Government departments and agencies and voluntary associations.  In the 2021 UK Research Excellence Framework the School was returned to two sub panels, Sociology and Education. We were placed in the top ten in each sub panel by grade point average, joint first for impact in Education and fourth overall for research power in Sociology.

The School has a large student population, with almost 1000 undergraduates, and 300 postgraduates.  We have ESRC recognition for doctoral training in the fields of Criminology, Social Policy, Sociology, Education, and Science, Technology and Innovation and have secured a large number of ESRC collaborative doctoral awards. Our taught and postgraduate research programmes welcome students from around the world.

The School hosts a number of research centres and institutes, including the University's  Police Studies Institute (UPSI), now part of the University's Crime & Security Research Institute; the Wales Institute for Economic Research & Data (WISERD); the Children's Social Care Research and Development Centre (CASCADE); the Centre for Development, Evaluation, Complexity and Implementation in Public Health Improvement (DECIPHer); Centre for Adult Social Care Research (CARE) Many of the School's research centres are housed in the University's Social Science Research Park (SPARK) – a world first, and part of the University's wider Innovation Campus.

Essential Criteria
  1. A good first degree in a relevant discipline, plus a PhD or equivalent applied/professional experience.
  2. Proven teaching ability, ideally via a teaching qualification.
  3. Effective interpersonal skills to liaise with students and staff.
  4. Proven verbal and written communication skills.
  5. Evidence of demonstrable knowledge of key advances within specialist discipline.
  6. Evidence of ability to work unsupervised to deadlines, planning and setting priorities for own work.
Desirable Criteria
  • Ability to speak Welsh.
