Internal Redeployment Only - Senior Technician
Organisms and Environment Division, School of Biosciences

A position is available for a Senior Technician, to provide technical support to the Cardiff University Otter Project.

The role will include coordinating, carrying out and training others in post mortem examination of otters found dead; liaising with a wide range of environmental organisations, and data management and analysis. The successful candidate will therefore need a broad skill-set, including mammalian pathology, strong IT and data analysis skills, as well as good team-working and communication with professional networks.  

This position is full time (35 hours per week) and fixed term until 31 March 2026.

Salary: £28,031 - £31,236 per annum (Grade 4).
Please note that it is not expected that we will appoint above grade 4.18, currently £28,031 per annum.

JOB PURPOSE

The purpose of the role is to support the Cardiff University Otter Project with technical work including coordinating, carrying out and training other members of the research group in post mortem examination of otters found dead, as well as data management and analysis of the research outputs arising.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Duties
  • Liaise professionally with external organisations in order to coordinate otter deliveries and data sharing.
  • Following established guidelines, train technical staff and students in technical procedures and the use of equipment required to undertake otter post mortem examination and associated sampling.
  • Set up and assist in the running of experimental systems and project research activities.
  • Participate in the development, modification of research protocols.
  • Take responsibility for stock levels, security, maintenance and cleanliness of materials, apparatus and equipment within work area.
  • Record and perform detailed analysis on data, including responsibility for maintaining databases (using MS Access and R), digital mapping (using GIS), and training others in data input and validation.
  • Undertake reviews of technical processes and procedures, in collaboration with line management, and advise on options for improvement.
  • Support the research group in the implementation of new procedures and systems.

Essential Criteria

Qualifications and Education
  1. NVQ 3/A-Levels or equivalent qualification/work related experience
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  1. Substantial experience of working in a laboratory environment
  2. Ability to set up and review standard technical processes and procedures and recommend improvements to the service provision as appropriate
  3. Strong IT skills with the ability to maintain, service and use databases (e.g. Microsoft Access) and digital mapping systems (Arc or QGIS) within research
Customer Service, Communication and Team Working
  1. Ability to communicate specialist and complex information effectively and professionally to a range of customers with varying levels of understating.
  2. Experience of supervising the work of others to focus team efforts and motivate individuals
  3. Ability to train technical staff in laboratory procedures and in the use of equipment and instruments.
  4. Evidence of ability to explore customers' needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure a quality service is delivered and deal promptly, effectively and courteously with requests for information or service
Planning, Analysis and Problem Solving
  1. Ability to use initiative in solving problems and responding to queries ensuring compliance with standard operating procedures and practices
  2. Proven ability to work on own initiative and unsupervised to deadlines, planning, organising and setting priorities for own work, as well as managing small projects as appropriate
Desirable Criteria
  1. Experience of mammalian post mortem examination,
  2. Good understanding of statistical modelling using R
  3. Fluency in Welsh, written and oral
