The Rent Service is part of the Digital and Customer Services Division of Birmingham City Council and has significant duties for income collection to the Housing Revenue Account. We manage the collection of £268 million housing rents and also have responsibility for the recovery of former tenancy debt and Housing Benefit Overpayments for Local Authority tenants.

Our purpose is to maximise the collection of rent by providing our tenants with advice and assistance in order to prevent rent debt. We aim to promote self-sufficiency and identify vulnerable tenants at an early stage. We promote and maintain a strong payment culture and maximise income through receipt of relevant welfare benefits.

Revenue and Collection team is responsible for invoicing and collecting Housing Sundry Debts, reconciling housing rental income, ensuring rent accounts are maintained and property information is updated as soon as possible to avoid rental loss. We take a lead role in the successful implementation of the annual rent variation process for over 63,000 tenants. The team has responsibility for ensuring properties are correctly administered on Housing's Northgate NEC system to enable Tenancy Estate Management to undertake their role.

Key functions of this role are to manage and supervise the sorting, balancing, posting and distribution of payments from the Department for Work and Pensions, Post Offices, Payzone and Paypoint outlets, banks together with internal departmental transfers.  The role also assumes responsibility for the resolution and posting of any unpaid cheques and locating missing payments, ensuring payments in any suspense accounts are resolved and posted to the correct rent and Sundry Debt accounts, set up direct debits and issue Direct Debit schedules. Weekly income reconciliations for Housing Rent Payments are also undertaken.

Ideally you will have some knowledge of the Housing Northgate NEC system, however, you must demonstrate experience and knowledge of working with other main frame systems. You will also need to demonstrate experience of working in a busy office, undertaking a number of tasks of high volume within strict timescales and deadlines and be able to work independently as well as part of a team.
