Job introduction

SEN Casework Officer Wanted

Come and join the SEN Team at Hove Town Hall. We are a well-established and respected team delivering a statutory service for children and young people in the city who have Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

The post is part-time 18.5 hours per week. It is fixed term for 2 years.

Please note, shortlisting and interviews happen on a frequent basis so please submit applications as soon as possible. This advert will be withdrawn if the vacancy is filled.

The interview will involve a panel interview and a short task (no preparation necessary for the task).

About the role

We are looking for an efficient and hardworking SEN Casework Officer to ensure the right statutory provision is available at the right time for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

Working within the legislative framework, you will be responsible for co-ordinating the assessment, production and review of Education Health and Care (EHC) plans and other aspects of special educational needs of individual pupils.

You will have a caseload related to a defined group of schools, colleges or geographical area, and will work closely with parents, carers and professionals from a range of voluntary and statutory agencies.

SEN Casework Officers are also tasked with one or more special areas of responsibility.

While a background in education, social care or special educational needs are advantageous, they are not essential. You will need to evidence excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to relate well to parents, carers and professionals. You will also need to demonstrate strong communication, prioritisation and negotiation skills. You will be working to challenging deadlines with some autonomy and will need to have a flexible approach but will have a supportive team of experienced casework officers and managers around you.

There is an emphasis on team working and striving for continuous improvement to our service, within a customer care environment.

Please read our Apply for a job at the council pages carefully. They give you all the guidance you need to complete your application as well as information on what will happen after you've submitted your application and at interview.

As part of your application, you will need to complete your education and work history and upload a supporting statement. Your supporting statement is the most important part of your application as it will be used in the shortlisting process to assess whether you meet the essential requirements for the role that are set out in the person specification and to decide whether you should be offered an interview. Before you start your application, please read our guidance here (Application form guidance) and Supporting statement guidance as this gives important advice which will increase your chance of success in the shortlisting process.

Additional information

Your starting salary will be pro rata if the above position is less than 37 hours or term-time only.

We are a workplace that supports flexibility and employee wellbeing in the way we work whilst providing the best service for our customers. Team and service working arrangements are designed to support both employee work life balance and team collaboration. These would be part of your individual working arrangements alongside any personal preference agreed with your manager in advance of joining. Your contractual location will be the designated council office for your team and travel to and from your contractual location would be at your own expense.
