Learning and Capability Lead

Location: London (hybrid working)

Salary:  £52,000 - £56,000

Hours:  37.5

Contract Type: 12-month fixed term contract

What we are looking for

We're looking for an experienced, digitally confident  Learning and Capability Lead to join us for 12 months and help shape the future of how our people learn, grow, and thrive. If you love turning ideas into meaningful, practical experiences — and you're energised by collaboration, creativity, and doing things differently — this could be the perfect role for you.

In this role, you'll take the lead in designing and delivering our learning and talent strategy, developing clear career pathways, capability frameworks, and creating inspiring leadership and people management development programmes. You'll also have the opportunity to influence key aspects of our wider people strategy, helping us embed a culture where learning is continuous, curiosity is encouraged, and innovation is part of everyday work.

You'll play a pivotal role in mentoring and upskilling our People team — building their confidence, strengthening their capability, and championing fresh approaches to L&D. If you're excited by the idea of putting people at the heart of learning and exploring new ways of working, we'd love to hear from you.

Key Responsibilities

Learning & Development Design & Delivery

• Design and deliver engaging learning experiences for all levels, using digital, blended, and innovative approaches.

• Partner with internal teams and external providers to bring fresh thinking and practical solutions.

• Ensure learning activity aligns with organisational priorities and delivers measurable impact.

Career Pathways & Capability Frameworks

• Develop clear career pathways that support growth, and ownership of development.

• Work with managers to build and maintain a skills and capability framework aligned to organisational needs.

• Embed these frameworks across people processes and create tools that help individuals plan their careers.

Leadership & Management Development

• Create people-centred leadership and management programmes that build confidence and capability.

• Enable ongoing learning through coaching, mentoring, and peer-learning opportunities.

• Refine programmes using feedback and insights to ensure they stay relevant and effective.

People Projects & Collaboration

• Lead or support wider People initiatives, bringing a learning mindset and collaborative approach.

• Mentor and upskill the People team to strengthen L&D capability across the function.

Measurement & Continuous Improvement

• Track key learning and capability metrics to understand progress and impact.

• Share clear, meaningful insights with senior stakeholders.

• Embed continuous improvement by using data, feedback, and experimentation to evolve our approach.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential

  • Experience developing career pathways, capability frameworks, and leadership development.
  • Significant experience designing L&D programmes, including digital and blended learning.
  • Able to influence senior stakeholders and build strong relationships.
  • Confident using data and feedback to measure impact and improve outcomes.
  • Solid project management and organisational skills.

Desirable

  • CIPD Level 5 or 7, or equivalent L&D/HR qualification.
  • Background in innovative or people-centred environments.
  • Experience of working in an SME

What we offer:

• An entrepreneurial environment; we're open to new ideas.

• Supported route to chartership (including professional membership fees), including enhanced learning and development opportunities.

• Flexible and hybrid working, including the possibility to work a compressed 9-day fortnight.

• 25 days annual leave + bank holidays.

• Service Recognition Awards.

• Working Nursery Scheme.

• Private medical insurance for you and your family.

• Annual Eyecare Plan.

• Life Assurance.

• Company Pension Scheme (grade dependent, minimum of 6%).

• Cycle to Work Scheme.

• Free access to our Employee Assistance Program (EAP) for you and your family.

• Thriving Trust-wide social scene, including charitable activities.

Who We Are

The Useful Simple Trust (UST) is a family of professional design and consultancy practices. Our 90+ talented and committed engineers, architects, designers and strategists work side-by-side creating positive outcomes for our changing built environment.

Useful Studio, Expedition Engineering and Useful Projects share space, ideas and experience, and regularly collaborate on a range of high-profile projects in the UK and internationally. Our breadth of experience gives us a depth of inter-disciplinary thinking rarely found in the industry.

As a Social Enterprise, B Corp and Employee Benefit Organisation we do things differently. Our people are highly motivated and committed because our structure and values mean that our combined success is shared equitably. We share part of our profit and re-invest the rest in research, social and environmental projects.

Diversity Statement

UST strives to be a diverse and inclusive place where we can all be ourselves. We are working to change the lack of representation of minority groups and are particularly keen to hear from anyone with relevant skills and experience who feels they are underrepresented in the industry.

We encourage people from culturally diverse backgrounds, women, people with different abilities, LGBTIQ+ community, gender, all age groups, and those with intersectional or multiple diverse characteristics to apply. We know that diversity makes us stronger, and we are committed to creating a working environment that is inclusive and ensures everyone can be heard and valued for their contributions
