Night Therapeutic Care Worker

Hours: 39 hours (night shift pattern over 3 weeks, including some weekends)

Job Summary

As a Night Therapeutic Care Worker, you will help maintain a safe, nurturing and therapeutic home for up to five girls aged 8–13 who have experienced early childhood trauma. You will create a calm, stable night-time environment where children feel secure, supported, and cared for. Your role focuses on overnight supervision, cleaning tasks, and ensuring the home is prepared for the following day, all while working therapeutically in line with the home's model of practice.

Main Duties

Although the house follows a typical family home routine, your primary focus will be the night-time period. Typical duties include:

Bedtime and Evening Support

  • Providing a calm and therapeutic presence where children feel safe going to sleep and knowing there is someone there is they need them in the night.
  • Responding appropriately to any night wakings, anxieties, or challenges, using PACE principles and therapeutic approaches.

Night Supervision

  • Monitoring the home throughout the night to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all children.
  • Carrying out regular night-time checks in line with policy and individual care plans.
  • Recording any significant events, sleep patterns, or concerns from the night.

Cleaning and Domestic Tasks

  • Completing household cleaning tasks to ensure the home is tidy, hygienic, and welcoming for the next day (e.g., kitchens, bathrooms, communal spaces).
  • Preparing packed lunches, breakfast items or materials for the morning routines as required.
  • Completing laundry, organising children's clothing, and restocking household supplies.
  • Light maintenance or organisational tasks such as tidying cupboards, clothing repairs, or sanitising surfaces.

Planning, Recording and Communication

  • Carrying out required paperwork, including logbooks, incident reports, handovers and
  • Communicating effectively with day staff during handover to ensure continuity of care.
  • Contributing to finding ways to overcome any sleep issues a child may have. Safeguarding and Compliance
  • Monitoring the health, safety and wellbeing of the children and reporting concerns promptly.
  • Adhering to all safeguarding procedures in line with the Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB), Working Together to Safeguard Children (2023) and related policies.
  • Ensuring work complies with all statutory regulations including the Children Act 1989, Children Act 2004, Care Standards Act 2000, and Children's Homes (England) Regulations 2015.
  • Following Health and Safety procedures such as infection control, safe medication practice, fire safety and night-time security.

Other Duties

  • Supporting the therapeutic ethos of the home at all times.
  • Undertaking any reasonable tasks required by the Registered Manager in support of the children's needs and the smooth running of the service.
  • Occasionally working at other Genesis homes if required.

How Do We Complete These Duties?

Therapeutic Practice

  • Putting the child at the centre of every decision and viewing their behaviour through a trauma-informed lens.
  • Using PACE (Playfulness, Acceptance, Curiosity, Empathy) consistently during night interactions, offering reassurance and emotional containment when needed.
  • Knowing each child's background, needs, triggers, preferences, and care plan.

Role Modelling

  • Demonstrating calmness, patience and emotional regulation, especially during night-time challenges.
  • Modelling positive routines such as managing tiredness, resolving conflict calmly, and maintaining personal boundaries.

Teamwork and Communication

  • Working closely with the wider staff team, even though you are primarily on night shifts.
  • Attending team meetings, reflective sessions and supervision to share observations and support a consistent approach across the home.
  • Ensuring detailed handovers so that day staff can continue care seamlessly.

Proactivity and Organisation

  • Staying organised during quieter periods at night by completing domestic tasks and paperwork.
  • Thinking ahead about what can be prepared for the next day.
  • Remaining aware, vigilant and ready to respond to needs throughout the night.

Skills and Experience We Are Looking For

  • Willingness to work with children, learn therapeutic approaches and embrace training.
  • Ability to complete cleaning tasks to a high standard and use initiative to spot extra tasks and things that will be helpful for day staff.
  • Resilience and calmness under pressure, especially during night-time incidents.
  • Ability to maintain boundaries and uphold professional standards.
  • Self-reflective practice, using supervision and reflective discussions to learn and grow.
  • Ability to meet shift requirements.
  • Manual driver's licence (may be required occasionally for evening tasks or cross-cover).
  • Level 3 Diploma in Residential Childcare (or willingness to achieve within 2 years). Training will be funded via a training agreement after successful probation.

Pay: From £28,500.00 per year
