Up to Two Resident Board Members
If you're an enthusiastic local, join Opportunity Kensington BID in its mission to 'bring the fun back' to High Street Kensington and to restore its fortunes as one of west London's most celebrated commercial centres.
What difference will you make?
As a director you will be asked to contribute your insight and judgement on key strategic decisions and procedural matters to ensure the success of Opportunity Kensington Business Improvement District (BID) and its members.
During our current first term we have been taking care of the basics - ensuring an attractive, safe and collegiate environment and building a compelling marketing proposition for our neighbourhood. As we approach our first renewal ballot in 2026, our ambition is growing. We believe we can achieve wider-scale transformation of the area, returning it to the glory days of the past.
Residents use High Street Kensington on a daily basis. They can tell us what encourages them to come and what puts them off. They can also tell us what the street needs if it is to retain their loyalty and their spending into the future. They can also help us understand the role we can play in building a healthy and happy community in Kensington.
What are we looking for?
We are specifically looking for residents of the wider Kensington area with a particular interest in the fortunes of our High Street and core commercial area. They should also have at least three years' experience in one of the areas in which the Board is short - Legal, Digital & IT Strategy, Property Management/Real Estate, Town Planning and Advocacy/Public Affairs.
The Opportunity Kensington Board Handbook furthermore states 'As far as possible there should be gender balance, diverse ethnicity and a good spatial spread across the BID area.' We actively welcome applications from individuals who may not think they have all the necessary experience but bring diversity to the board – particularly of ethnicity and age.
You do not need to have previous director level experience to apply for this role.
What will you be doing?
As a Business Improvement District (BID) our Board is largely made up of businesspeople from our 400-strong membership. We reserve two places for residents however as we believe they bring a different but complementary voice to our discussions.
You will
- Live in the Kensington area
- Have a strong understanding of the neighbourhood and a passion for driving improvements that support all members of the community.
- Bring a grasp of the needs and interests of residents in the Kensington High Street area.
- Speak to issues affecting local communities including those that are less-often heard.
- Work in partnership with Opportunity Kensington's members, the Council and other local stakeholders to effect positive change.
- Be willing to promote the BID's interests to people within your network who are influential in public, private and voluntary sectors.
- Be available for eight Board meetings per year (1.5 hours each at the end of the typical working day) and a strategic 'away day' annually.
- Behave in a principled and collegiate manner in line with the 'desirable attributes' set out in the company's Board Handbook (copy to be provided to those selected for interview).
