First Touch is seeking a Charity Secretary to join its lively and engaged Board of Trustees. First Touch is a registered charity and supports babies, families and staff at St George's Hospital Neonatal Unit in London.

What difference will you make?

As well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee, the Secretary maintains an overview of First Touch's legal and compliance affairs. The Secretary ensures that the charity operates in line with governing documents, legal obligations and best governance practices. The Secretary will work closely with the Chair, Charity Director and Charity administrator by managing meetings, records, and compliance, helping the charity remain transparent, accountable, and well-organised.

First Touch is dedicated to advancing neonatal care at St George's Hospital by funding cutting-edge equipment, specialised staff training, and compassionate family support initiatives beyond the scope of NHS provision.

What are we looking for?

For the role of secretary we are seeking a legal professional, with knowledge of charity governance processes, however an enthusiasm to learn and draw on a legal background is what we are looking for. Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Essential:

  • Understanding of charity governance and legal responsibilities.

  • Strong organisational and administrative skills.

  • Ability to write clear, concise minutes and documents.

  • Confidentiality and discretion.

  • Desirable:

  • Experience in a similar role within the voluntary sector.

  • Familiarity with the Charity Commission's guidance and reporting tools.

  • Knowledge of GDPR and data protection practices.

What will you be doing?

First Touch was founded in 1998 to help funding cutting-edge equipment, specialised staff training, and compassionate family support initiatives beyond the scope of NHS provision at St George's neonatal unit. First Touch is based at St George's neonatal unit, and is a small charity that is independent of St George's Hospital Charity.

  • Governance & Compliance

  • Ensure meetings comply with the governing document and legal requirements.

  • Submit required documentation to the Charity Commission

  • Maintain up-to-date records of trustee appointments and resignations.

  • Monitor compliance with charity law and regulatory obligations.

  • Board Support

  • Schedule trustee board and sub-committee meetings.

  • Support team in preparing and circulating agendas and supporting papers in advance.

  • Review minutes and ensure timely distribution.

  • Track decisions and actions, supporting the Chair in follow-up.

  • Advise on any suitable training for Board members with regard to legal duties/responsibilities as trustees

  • Record Keeping

  • Maintain statutory registers and records (e.g., minutes, resolutions, trustee declarations).

  • Ensure secure storage and accessibility of key documents.

  • Communication

  • Act as a point of contact for trustees regarding governance matters.

  • Manage correspondence with Charity Commission
