Ready to shape the strategic direction of government litigation while leading a high-performing legal team?

As a joint branch head you will be involved fully in the branch's work representing Scottish Ministers and other agencies and bodies in litigation across the full spectrum of Scotland's courts and tribunals, and assisting with the strategic direction of the branch and wider division.

The branch deals with a very wide range of litigation across government and beyond, for Scottish Ministers, for agencies and for a number of other non-governmental bodies. Much of the work is high-profile and involves working closely with the Law Officers and other Ministers. The profile of the work requires dealing with it at pace and dealing credibly with opposing solicitors, with whom you are likely to have an ongoing relationship. 
 

Responsibilities
  • Provides legal advice on litigation handling.
  • Conducts litigation on behalf of Scottish Ministers in courts and tribunals in Scotland.
  • Responsible for providing legal advice on lawfulness and legal risk, making recommendations to mitigate and manage legal risk;.
  • Leads a team effectively setting clear goals and priorities and managing the team workload equitably.
  • Supervises, supports and empowers lawyers in all aspects of their work; and generally supporting lawyers with their development.
  • Communicates effectively with colleagues across SG, builds strong, collaborative working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders and conveys complex issues clearly and concisely.
  • Contributes to the management of the division, supporting fellow branch heads and DD, including with strategic work and decision-making.
  • Ensures a culture that is innovative, flexible, constructive and kind. 
  • Formal line-management responsibilities are split equally between the two branch heads, but in effect both lead and direct the whole of the branch, providing a strategic overview of the whole team's work and engagement with clients and Ministers
  • As well as managing a branch you will be part of the team setting the strategic direction for the division. This involves considering the profile of the division within the Directorate and beyond; managing change; taking part in profile raising work; and modelling the behaviours of senior leaders in the Civil Service.
