Grant Writer

London, Greater London, United Kingdom Carma Full time £25,000 - £40,000 per year

Join our campaign - Re Make - as a Grant Writer helping us secure the resources to reshape the industry. Research, write, and manage funding opportunities that fuel our mission to build a fair, sustainable, people-first industry.
What difference will you make?

The cheap-clothes boom left towns behind, replacing stable industry with insecure, unsafe work.

This is a chance to help rewrite the fashion industries story — while democratising access to creative work.

By volunteering as a Grant Writer / Fundraiser, you will

  • Secure vital funding that allows Re Make to expand training, factories, and community programs.
  • Help regenerate towns left behind by offshoring.
  • Directly enable the creation of fair jobs, new skills, and sustainable production.
  • Play a central role in proving fashion can be ethical, circular, digital, and people-first.

The Hidden Cost of Cheap Clothes
For decades, textile towns across Britain powered local economies. Generations built livelihoods in mills and garment factories. At their peak, the UK had
thousands of factories
employing tens of thousands of workers.

Then came offshoring. Clothes became cheaper, but the real cost was paid here at home

  • Job loss → Factory numbers collapsed by over 90%, wiping out secure employment in just a few years.
  • Skills wasted → Generations of expertise disappeared. By 2021, fewer than 5% of UK garment workers were under 35.
  • Communities hollowed out → Many areas now face some of the highest in-work poverty rates in the UK, with more than 1 in 4 workers earning below the Real Living Wage.
  • Exploitation returned → Investigations uncovered factories paying as little as £3.50 an hour.

This isn't just about global supply chains. It's about what happened in our own backyard — and why we now have a once-in-a-generation chance to put it right.

What are we looking for?

We're looking for someone who thrives on writing, research, and storytelling — and who wants to use those skills to drive systemic change.

Ideal qualities and skills include

  • Strong writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to research and synthesise information clearly.
  • Organised and deadline-focused.
  • Experience in grant writing, fundraising, or bid writing (a plus, not essential).
  • Passion for sustainability, fair work, and community regeneration.

This role is perfect for someone who wants to apply their writing and fundraising skills to a mission-driven cause — helping us secure the resources that make fashion's second chance possible.

What will you be doing?

We're looking for a Volunteer Grant Writer / Fundraiser to help power Re Make — a movement reshoring fashion with purpose. You'll play a critical role in securing the funding that allows us to grow, train, and equip the teams rebuilding fashion's future.

The Role Volunteer Grant Writer / Fundraiser
Volunteers are the backbone of Re Make, and funding is the fuel that keeps the movement growing.

We are seeking a committed Grant Writer / Fundraiser to help identify, write, and secure funding opportunities — from charitable foundations to innovation grants and impact investors. You'll craft compelling proposals, manage funding pipelines, and help us build the financial foundation for lasting change.

Responsibilities

  • Research and track relevant grants, funds, and donors.
  • Draft, edit, and submit high-quality funding applications.
  • Build relationships with funders and supporters.
  • Maintain a pipeline of opportunities and reporting deadlines.
  • Ensure our mission, values, and impact are clearly communicated.

Deliverables

  • A pipeline of active funding opportunities.
  • Successful submission of grant and fundraising applications.
  • Clear reporting to demonstrate impact and accountability.

Offshoring – The Problem
For decades, offshoring promised cheap clothes but left communities hollowed out, jobs lost, and skills wasted.

What replaced it were insecure shifts, gig scraps, and underground sweatshops.

Fast fashion made it worse exploitative, polluting, disposable.

Reshoring with Purpose – The Opportunity
Now we have a chance to do it differently — a radical new blueprint for fashion's second chance.

Re Make is bringing production back with purpose good jobs, new skills, true sustainability, and wealth that stays in communities.
