We are a busy, friendly, rural NHS Trust providing high-quality care and compassion to more than a quarter of a million people across west Suffolk. We care for, treat and support people in hospital, at home and in various community settings.

The West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds provides acute and secondary care services (emergency department, maternity and neonatal services, day surgery unit, eye treatment centre, Macmillan unit and children's ward). It has 500+ beds and is a partner teaching hospital of the University of Cambridge.

Adult and paediatric community services, provided in collaboration with West Suffolk Alliance partners, include a range of nursing, therapy, specialist, and ongoing temporary care and rehabilitation, some at our Newmarket Community Hospital.

We do our utmost to achieve outstanding clinical outcomes for patients and our values of fairness, inclusivity, respect, safety and team work guide how we work and behave as a team.

With nearly 5,000 staff, from all over the world, we strive to make our organisation a great place to work. Whatever your role or ambition, we want to help you be the best you can be.

We promote a diverse and inclusive community where everyones voice counts and you can #BeKnown for whoever you are.

Join us. What will you #BeKnown for?

The department was opened as an NHS Eye Treatment Centre in 2004 adjoining the Day Surgery Unit. The building was planned in close cooperation with the architect by clinicians to provide a first-class environment for staff and patients. The ground floor comprises a cataract unit and a medical retina suite with nurse assessment rooms with IOL masters, an auto refractor, fundus camera and Cirrus OCT. Adjacent to the cataract unit is a large comfortable surgical waiting area leading to the ophthalmic theatre. Theatres are equipped to a high standard with Zeiss microscopes and B&L phacoemulsification machines, one with posterior vitrectomy capability; 99% of surgery including children under GA is conducted as day case work.

Excellent PA support to ensure efficient management of administrative tasks, allowing to focus on patient care and professional development, with designated office space for privacy and convenience, and working alongside with 6 knowledgeable nurse specialists with prescribing training, that offer assistance in clinic settings, addressing patient inquiries, and managing administrative tasks.

The first floor consists of a large waiting and reception area leading on to further waiting areas surrounding the central clinical complex. There are ten consulting rooms arranged in two rows of five separated by a linking corridor. Equipment is to a high standard and includes networked PCs, reclining examination chairs and automated slit lamp platforms. There are three orthoptic rooms and a low visual aid assessment room. There is a visual field room with two Humphrey field analysers and a Goldman perimeter, separate argon and YAG laser rooms, a minor operations theatre and photographic room with fundus camera and Heidelberg FFA / ICG / FAF / OCT.
