The Trust operates an integrated approach to Medicine across both sites (Denmark Hill and the Princess Royal University Hospital). Activity within Medicine is organised using a ward-based structure, with each sub-specialty having its own designated ward.
The management of inpatient stays is one of the Trust's key performance areas. In addition to managing attendances in collaboration with Acute Medicine and Emergency Care, we work closely with innovative and collaborative Intermediate Care schemes such as the Home-Based Rehabilitation Team and the Bed-Based Rehabilitation Team. A team of Discharge Coordinators, responsible for managing complex discharges across the hospital, is also based at the PRUH.
The team is also closely linked with the Medical School and considers the interrelationship between clinical services and research and development to be a key component in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
The post-holder will be expected to attend morning board rounds, ward rounds, and multidisciplinary meetings held on their base ward. They will also be responsible for supporting and helping to organize junior staff in the day-to-day running of the ward, ensuring that discharge summaries are completed appropriately, and assisting with discharge planning. Occasionally, there may be medical outliers on other wards that need to be managed by the ward teams, as well as shared care of patients in critical care. When present on the ward, the post-holder will provide support to the entire team as needed, particularly in managing seriously ill patients and medical emergencies.
Each day begins with a full patient review led by the Consultant, prioritizing critically ill patients and those suitable for early discharge. This is followed by the morning board round involving nursing and allied health teams.
The post will be based on a ward at either the Princess Royal University Hospital or Orpington Hospital, depending on where the service need is greatest. Previous NHS experience is beneficial.
