Paediatric Phlebotomist

Job Summary:
We are seeking a compassionate and skilled Paediatric Phlebotomist to join our innovative and supportive team at the Allergy Centre of Excellence. This dual role is vital in supporting high-quality allergy care, combining expert venepuncture skills with broader healthcare assistant duties to care for children and young people undergoing allergy assessment and management.
Working under the supervision of registered clinicians, you will contribute to a safe, welcoming, and child-friendly environment during outpatient allergy clinics, food challenges, skin testing, and specialist procedures.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
Phlebotomy:
· Perform safe and effective venepuncture on infants, children and young people in accordance with local and national guidelines.
· Perform safe and effective cannulation on infants, children and young people in accordance with local and national guidelines
· Prepare children and families for blood tests, providing emotional reassurance and age-appropriate distraction techniques.
· Correctly label and process blood samples for allergy testing and other investigations.
· Maintain accurate and timely documentation of all blood draws and procedures.
· Adhere to infection control, sharps handling, and sample transport protocols.
Provide care and comfort to children during procedures, including play support, distraction, and emotional reassurance.
· Support with stock management and preparation of clinical areas (e.g., ensuring emergency equipment and allergy kits are in place).
· Maintain a clean and safe clinical environment, following infection prevention and control procedures.
· Collaborate effectively with nurses, doctors, dietitians, and admin staff to ensure seamless patient care.
Infection Control:
All post holders have a personal obligation to act to reduce healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs). They must attend mandatory training in Infection Control and be compliant with all measures required
Risk Management:
All post holders have a responsibility to report risks such as clinical and non-clinical accidents or incidents promptly. They are expected to be familiar with the use of risk assessments to predict and control risk, as well as the incident reporting system for learning from mistakes and near misses in order to improve services. Post holders must also attend training identified by their manager, or stated by the organisation to be mandatory.
Flexible Working
As an organisation we are committed to developing our services in ways that best suit the needs of our patients. This means that some staff groups will increasingly be asked to work a more flexible shift pattern so that we can offer services in the evenings or at weekends.
Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults
Post holders have a general responsibility for safeguarding children and vulnerable adults in the course of their daily duties and for ensuring that they are aware of the specific duties relating to their role.
Sustainability
It is the responsibility of all staff to minimise the clinics environmental impact by recycling wherever possible, switching off lights, computers monitors and equipment when not in use, minimising water usage and reporting faults promptly.

Allergy Centre of Excellence is committed to providing a healthy and safe environment for staff, patients and visitors. Staff are therefore not permitted to smoke on the property
Person Specification:
Essential:
Accredited training and recent experience in phlebotomy and cannulation, with specific experience in paediatric venepuncture
Willingness to complete Care Certificate
Experience working with children in a healthcare setting
Good level of literacy and numeracy
Basic understanding of paediatric allergies and anaphylaxis
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with children, families, and multidisciplinary teams
Knowledge of infection control, safeguarding, and consent procedures
Confidence in dealing with potentially distressing situations and maintaining a calm manner
Desirable:
NVQ Level 2/3 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent experience)
Previous experience in allergy
Training in play therapy, distraction techniques, or sensory support
Familiarity with electronic health records
Paediatric Basic Life Support certified
