JOB DESCRIPTION – KG Health and Wellbeing Support (BAND 2)
RESPONSIBLE TO :
Physiotherapist and Health & Clinical Lead and Manager
OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY:
Supporting and working directly with the Pupils:
- To develop a knowledge of a range of physical and mental health needs and learning support needs of pupils within school.
- To develop an understanding of the specific individual needs of pupils.
- To establish a supportive relationship with the pupils concerned.
- To provided health and therapy focused sessions which have been set by other professionals individually, in groups and within the classroom.
- To develop methods of promoting/reinforcing the child's self-esteem, health and wellbeing.
- Developing appropriate resources for the school.
- Understanding the health and medical needs of pupils, and helping facilitate a safe and health prompting environment to aid the pupils to learn as effectively as possible both in group situations and on his/her own.
- Contribute to the overall activities of Health Wellbeing team in school.
- Examples of practice:
- OT informed therapy sessions
- SaLT informed therapy sessions
- Physiotherapy informed therapy sessions
- Sensory integration techniques within the classroom
- Understanding of medical conditions such as Asthma, Diabetes, and medical devices such as EpiPens and NG feeding tubes.
- Administering prescribed medication inline with school protocol.
- Assisting with medical devices inline with school protocol.
- First aid assessment and interventions.
- PRICE guided physical intervention to help pupils remain safe
- Motivating and encouraging the child as required
Well-Being
- Support pupils THRIVE targets
- Communicate, as appropriate, with parents/carers of pupils after consultation with appropriate staff
- Liaison with Health, Social Care and other professional services, as identified by SENDCo, Clinical Lead and Manager and Wellbeing Lead
- Liaise with and support families as identified in partnership with the Health Clinical Lead and Manager.
- To provide therapeutic interventions (as above) for which you are appropriately trained, qualified and experienced, to support pupils to manage therapeutic interventions and to take part in training sessions and CPD as appropriate, as identified by the Health Clinical Lead and Manager
Teaching and Learning
- Optimise learning by ensuring therapeutic techniques are ingrained within pupils' day to maximise pupils' health and wellbeing within the educational setting.
- Be familiar with the systems on the school MIS and prepare and present informative, helpful and accurate reports to parents.
- Assist to minimise the negative impact of health needs on pupils' education.
Supporting the Wellbeing Lead and Health Clinical Lead and Manager
- To assist the Health Clinical Lead and Manager in the development of suitable programs and input for pupils.
- In conjunction with the Health Clinical Lead and Manager assist in the monitoring and record keeping of pupils' progress (e.g. Thrive recording, therapy monitoring forms)
- To provide regular feedback about pupils' to the Wellbeing Leads and Health Clinical Lead and Manager.
- Provide support for the pupil annual reviews, PfA and careers documentation
- Assist with administrative tasks of the Health and wellbeing team (ie vaccination documentation)
Subject Knowledge and Understanding
- Have a thorough and up to date knowledge and understanding of the school policies and procedures for THRIVE, Physical and Mental Health and SEND.
- Keep up to date with research and developments in health needs of pupils, medical management within scope of the setting, Mental Health, behaviour management and therapeutic interventions.
- Remain up to date on PRICE training and physical interventions.
- Up to date first aid training.
Professional Standards and Development:
- Be a role model to pupils through personal presentation and professional conduct.
- Arrive for therapy sessions or lessons, on or before the start of the lesson, and begin and end lessons on time.
- Cover for absent colleagues as is reasonable, fair and equitable.
- Be familiar with the School and Department handbooks and support all the School's policies, e.g. those on Health and Safety, Health and Wellbeing.
- Establish effective working relationships with professional colleagues and associate staff.
- Be familiar with and implement the relevant requirements of the current SEND Code of Practice in collaboration with the Centre SENDCO.
- Consider the needs of all pupils within school setting (and implement specialist advice)
- Work within scope of knowledge and skill set, seeking advice when needed.
- Adhere to confidentially policy of school
Health and Safety
- Be aware of the responsibility for personal Health, Safety and Welfare and that of others who may be affected by your actions or inactions.
- Co-operate with the employer on all issues to do with Health, Safety & Welfare.
- To be a dedicated First Aider within the school.
Continuing Professional Development
- In conjunction with the Health Clinical lead and Manager and Head Teacher, take responsibility for personal professional development, keeping up to date with research and developments in appropriate physical and mental health conditions which may lead to improvements in the school experience for pupils.
- Undertake any necessary professional development as identified in the School Improvement Plan taking full advantage of any relevant training and development available.
- Maintain a professional portfolio of evidence to support the Appraisal process - evaluating and improving own practice.
- Be familiar with and implement the relevant requirements of the current SEND Code of Practice and the safeguarding of children in Education (KCSIE)
- Contribute to the professional development of colleagues.
- Complete 30 Hours of CPD annually as required and / or identified by Senior staff members.
- Regular and up to date training in physical intervention and PRICE.
The duties above are neither exclusive nor exhaustive and the post holder may be required by the Headteacher to carry out appropriate duties within the context of the job, skills and grade.
