About the Role

As our named Patient Safety Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in embedding a culture of learning, openness, and improvement across PHL. You'll lead on implementing the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF), using insights and evidence to minimise harm and enhance outcomes for those in our care.

Working closely with clinical and corporate colleagues, you'll support system wide learning, promote innovation in safety improvement, and ensure that human factors and "just culture" principles are integral to how we work.

You will also act as Medical Devices Officer, overseeing the safe use and management of medical equipment, and help recruit and support Patient Safety Partners and Champions to ensure service users' voices are central to improvement efforts.

Location

Hybrid working with a requirement to travel to either Segensworth (Hampshire), Stoke (Staffordshire) and Birmingham (West Midlands). There will be a requirement of a minimum of 3 days per week working in sites/services. Travel will be required to sites across the UK.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead on developing and implementing patient safety strategies aligned to the NHS Patient Safety Strategy and PSIRF.
  • Use safety data and insight (incidents, near misses, complaints) to identify trends, risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Provide reports and assurance to senior leadership and the Board on patient safety performance.
  • Support multi-agency investigations and lead on learning dissemination and action tracking.
  • Promote an open and transparent culture where staff feel empowered to speak up.
  • Oversee safe management, training, and quality assurance of medical devices across services.
  • Collaborate with patients, carers, and staff to co-design improvements and embed patient voices in governance.

About You

We're looking for an experienced and passionate leader who can influence, inspire, and deliver lasting change in patient safety.

Essential:

  • A master's degree (or equivalent senior experience) in governance, risk, or safety.
  • Professional clinical registration (e.g., RN, Paramedic, Physiotherapist, Pharmacist).
  • Significant experience in patient safety, quality improvement, or clinical governance.
  • Strong knowledge of NHS patient safety policy, PSIRF, and systems thinking approaches.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and analytical skills.

Desirable:

  • Postgraduate qualification in patient safety.
  • Experience of developing and delivering training programmes.
  • Familiarity with co-production approaches and working with diverse patient groups.

Why Join Us?

At PHL, we live by our values: Truly Care | Team First | Pioneering Innovation.

You'll join a supportive, forward-thinking team where your clinical expertise, leadership, and compassion make a real difference to the lives of those affected by sexual assault.
