DfT is a high-profile department at the heart of UK government. We work with agencies and partners to support the transport network that helps businesses and gets people and goods travelling around the country. We plan and invest to make journeys better.

Workforce Planning ensures organisations have enough of the right skills and capabilities to deliver organisation priorities, both in the short and long term. At the heart of this is translating business strategy into a strategic workforce plan which identifies future workforce requirements and capability gaps, so that strategic resourcing solutions can be developed to address the gaps. Effective and timely workforce planning goes beyond forecasting headcount and can provide agile people solutions to complement the future direction of a business.

Joining our department comes with many benefits, including:

  • Employer pension contribution of 28.97% of your salary. Read more about Civil Service Pensions here
  • 25 days annual leave, increasing by 1 day each year of service (up to a maximum of 30 days annual leave), plus 8 bank holidays a privilege day for the King's birthday
  • Flexible working options where we encourage a great work-life balance.

Job description

We are seeking an individual with strong Microsoft Excel modelling skills and a keen interest in Human Resources to join our team. This role offers the opportunity to contribute to the development of our workforce planning expert service, working collaboratively across the HR function and wider department to deliver strategic workforce solutions.

This role would suit someone who enjoys being part of team and working with others but is also comfortable working independently. If you are new to Human Resources, then it offers the chance to explore the profession as workforce planning touches on the whole function and its different specialist areas. You will be supported to understand the role of the profession and the department it supports. If you are already an HR professional then you will be supported to develop further and work in a highly strategic area, looking to the future and assessing how priorities will be delivered through our people.

The successful candidate will:

  • Build and maintain workforce planning models in Excel to forecast future staffing needs and support medium- to long-term resourcing plans.
  • Produce monthly workforce reports for HR Business Partners, providing insights and narrative on current position and future forecasts.
  • Identify workforce trends and risks to inform planning and decision-making.
  • Support the Workforce Planning Lead in developing strong relationships with key teams such as Finance and Strategy for a joined-up approach.
  • Work with HR stakeholders to ensure workforce data is accurate, available, and meets requirements.
  • Administer and analyse starter and leaver surveys, providing insights and recommendations to improve employee experience.
  • Develop and implement workforce planning processes, including creating guidance and upskilling colleagues.

Please note that the role profile is for information purposes only - whilst all elements are relevant to the role, they may not all be assessed during the recruitment process.
