Luton Council is seeking a dynamic and innovative Vision Rehabilitation Specialist to join our dedicated team. This is an exceptional opportunity for a professional with significant post-qualifying experience in the rehabilitation of visually impaired and deafblind individuals.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Complex Case Management: Handle complex and challenging cases, ensuring compliance with health and safety policies, and providing crisis intervention when necessary.
  • Customer Satisfaction: Demonstrate a commitment to customer satisfaction, with experience in advocacy and user/carer involvement, promoting client participation in developing their own care/support plans.
  • Coaching and Mentoring: Offer guidance, supervision, and mentorship to Outreach Workers and Social Care Assessors, fostering professional growth and effective case work practices.
  • Collaborative Working: Engage in partnership and inter-agency collaboration, promoting the benefits of a multi-disciplinary team approach to optimise resources and reduce duplication.
  • Communication: Effectively communicate with visually impaired or deafblind service users, their carers, and a variety of professionals, imparting new skills and strategies to enhance independence.
  • Record Maintenance: Maintain high-quality records, and produce clear, concise reports and correspondence using Council computer database and case recording systems.
  • Resource Management: Make professional judgments and negotiate resources within a multi-disciplinary setting, designing cost-effective care packages while understanding the financial implications.

About you

Essential Qualifications and Skills:
  • Educational Background: Dip HE in Visual Rehabilitation Studies or equivalent (minimum Level 5, 2-year full-time course or part-time equivalent).
  • Professional Registration: Accredited by the Rehabilitation Workers Professional Network, recognized by the Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care.
  • Legislative Knowledge: In-depth understanding of social care legislation and regulations, including the Care Act 2014, Sensory Best Practice Guidance, Making Safeguarding Personal, and more.
  • Customer Interface Experience: Skilled in working within a customer-focused environment with different adult social care client groups.
  • Organizational Skills: Ability to manage competing pressures and priorities, plan workloads effectively, and meet strict deadlines while maintaining high standards.
  • Commitment to Equality: Strong knowledge and understanding of equality issues, ensuring non-discriminatory service delivery.
  • Ongoing Development: Committed to personal and professional development, with a willingness to undertake post-qualifying training and acquire new skills.
Additional Requirements:
  • Home Visits: Ability to visit customers and families in their homes daily.
  • Flexible Working Hours: Willing to work outside normal office hours occasionally.
  • Research and Project Work: Engage in small-scale projects related to the rehabilitation needs of visually impaired or deafblind service users.
  • Practice Educator Training: Willingness to undergo training to support educational practice within the team.

Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.
