Job Purpose:

To support the Nursery Manager and deputy manager in delivering high-quality early years education and care. You will lead by example, supervise junior staff, and ensure that the setting operates in line with Scottish Government legislation, including Curriculum for Excellence (CfE), Realising the Ambition Being Me, and Health and Social Care Standards.

Key Responsibilities:

Childcare and Education:

  • Provide a safe, stimulating, and inclusive environment for children aged 0–5 years.
  • Plan, observe, and assess children's learning and development in line with the CfE and GIRFEC framework.
  • Promote emotional well-being and personal development through positive relationships and play.
  • Support the planning and delivery of age-appropriate activities, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Ensure the safeguarding and welfare of all children in your care.

Leadership and Teamwork:

  • Supervise and support nursery practitioners, apprentices, and students.
  • Mentor and guide junior staff in planning, assessment, and best practice.
  • Lead room practice and manage routines efficiently.
  • Contribute to staff meetings, appraisals, and training sessions.

Health & Safety and Compliance:

  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness, hygiene, and infection control.
  • Follow all policies related to child protection, health and safety, and food hygiene.
  • Keep accurate records, including care plans, incident logs, and development trackers.
  • Ensure compliance with Care Inspectorate and SSSC requirements.

Parent and Community Engagement:

  • Build trusting relationships with families, providing regular feedback on their child's development.
  • Participate in nursery events and community engagement initiatives.
  • Respect confidentiality and adhere to data protection policies (GDPR).

Essential Qualifications and Experience:

  • SVQ Level 3 in Social Services (Children and Young People) or equivalent.
  • Registered with the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC).
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a nursery or early years setting.
  • Strong knowledge of the Curriculum for Excellence and Realising the Ambition guidance.
  • Up-to-date training in Paediatric First Aid, Child Protection, and Food Hygiene.

Desirable:

  • SVQ Level 4 or equivalent in Early Years/Childcare.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of Additional Support Needs (ASN) support strategies.

Key Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Organised, proactive, and capable of taking initiative.
  • Passion for early years education and child development.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and as part of a team.

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent
