About the jobJob summary
Great British Energy will be a publicly owned, operationally independent energy company, designed to drive clean energy deployment, boost energy independence, create jobs and ensure U K taxpayers, billpayers and communities reap the benefits of clean, secure, homegrown energy. Setting up Great British Energy is one of government's first steps for change and we will do this in a way that means it will have both an early impact and long-term success.
Through its five functions (Project development, Project investment, Local Power Plan, Supply chains and Great British Nuclear), Great British Energy will speed up the deployment of mature and new technologies, as well as local energy projects, to support the government's aim of decarbonising our electricity system by 2030 whilst also ensuring we can meet future demand as we further decarbonise the economy.
To this end and as an example of what it can achieve, we have already agreed a major partnership between Great British Energy and The
Crown Estate to accelerate deployment and support U K supply chains.
Great British Energy will work collaboratively with industry, local authorities and communities, and other public sector organisations such as the National Wealth Fund, to spread skilled jobs and investment across the country. Great British Energy will be backed by a capitalisation of £8.3 billion of new money over this Parliament.
In recognition of Scotland's leading role in the UK's clean energy revolution, Great British Energy will be headquartered and run from Scotland.
More details can be found in the Great British Energy founding statement.
Roles in what will become Great British Energy will initially be undertaken in shadow form within the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero. They will then be transferred to Great British Energy when the Great British Energy Bill becomes law and the company has the necessary procedures and systems in place to employ people directly.
Job descriptionGreat British Energy is seeking a commercially astute and execution-focused investment professional to join our Business Development and Investments team as Transaction Lead. This role offers a rare opportunity to lead the structuring and execution of renewable energy deals that will directly contribute to the UK's net-zero transition.
The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in shaping GBE's investment portfolio by identifying, appraising, and executing co-investment and development opportunities across a range of clean energy technologies. You will manage commercial negotiations, lead due diligence processes, and support the development of GBE's investment strategy by delivering real-world transactions with strong commercial, technical, and financial foundations.
This is a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of the UK's public energy agenda and deliver impactful, scalable clean energy investments.
Why Join Us?
Great British Energy is building a bold and progressive portfolio of clean energy investments that will shape the UK's future. As Investments Lead, you'll be at the heart of our deal-making capability — turning strategy into action and impact. If you're ready to work on meaningful renewable energy deals with lasting legacy, we want to hear from you.
Person specificationThe role will include, but not be limited to:

- Manage end-to-end commercial negotiations with counterparties, including term sheets, heads of terms, and full contractual documentation.
- Present investment cases and make recommendations to GBE's Investment Committee, working with colleagues across technical, legal, and financial disciplines to ensure robust analysis and decision-making.
- Coordinate due diligence efforts with external advisors, identifying key risks and mitigation strategies for proposed investments.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with commercial partners to unlock new opportunities for GBE to invest in and accelerate clean energy delivery.
- Provide expert advice on the commercial viability of projects, ensuring investments align with strategic, financial, and policy objectives.
- Prepare clear, evidence-based investment papers and decision materials for internal governance and stakeholder communication.
As a line manager, you will be responsible for working with your members of staff to define their objectives, as well as managing their development and performance.
Essential Criteria
- Strong experience in executing investment or financing transactions in the renewable energy or infrastructure sector.
- Demonstrated ability to lead commercial negotiations and structure complex deals, including partnerships, co-investments, or acquisitions.

- Ability to assess technical and financial information quickly and distil it into actionable investment decisions.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience working across internal teams and external advisors.

- Proven ability to deliver transactions in a fast-moving, multi-stakeholder environment.
- Knowledge of UK energy markets and clean energy technologies (e.g., solar, wind, BESS, etc).
