Role:
Detective Sergeant

Location:

Contract:
2 years FTC starting April 2026

Salary:

Enjoying unique lifestyle opportunities, St Helena Island is a self-governing overseas territory of the United Kingdom. Although better placed to develop economically and socially as a result of opening our international airport in 2017, we are not at the stage of self-sufficiency and therefore remain dependent on UK government aid. The Royal St Helena Police comprises of a Chief of Police, a DCI, three Inspectors, five Sergeants including one DS and 19 Constables including three DCs.

You will inspire, coach, and lead a team working on PIP1 or PIP2 investigations, whilst also undertaking an investigative role utilising your specialist skills and technical knowledge. In addition, you will occasionally act as Custody Officer and support uniform operations during events and special occasions or due to operational demands.

As you co-ordinate and control (supervise) the investigative responses of your team, appropriately managing risks and monitoring progress within ongoing investigations. You must identify and co-ordinate new ways of working, applying critical thinking to identify solutions to problems in line with evidence based practice. You will oversee and undertake the completion of risk assessments and help to support victims. Co-ordinating with other investigators and managers you should establish and use methods for gathering material and develop strong procedures to turn intelligence into evidence. You will respond to safeguarding concerns, manage risk and oversee the disclosure process ensuring it complies with best practice and audit requirements. With the DI, you will develop the investigative skills of uniformed officers, and identify and mentor officers for progression or into the CID or other specialist roles.

You must show flexibility towards your working hours and be 'on call' as part of the CID and Sergeants' on call rota. The RSHP provides policing services on both St. Helena and Ascension Island so, while this role will be based on St. Helena, there may be short secondments to Ascension Island during the contract period.

Qualified to Sergeant, you have successfully completed PIP levels 1 and 2 Investigator accreditation and the PIP2 Investigative Supervisor/Manager learning programme. Experienced in serious and complex investigations, you have operational experience at DS level and your broad policing background covers a variety of operational environments. With practical knowledge and understanding of current policing challenges, efficiency and diversity issues, you have applied the National Decision Model in a variety of operational situations. You must be under 60 on the date of appointment.

In addition, you must demonstrate our core values of fairness, integrity and teamwork and use your diverse expertise and experiences to ensure your time on the Island has the broadest benefit to St Helena. As an officer funded through the Technical Co-Operation Programme you will be expected to share your knowledge and skills beyond the workplace contributing to workforce, community and capacity development in St Helena.
