Mechanical Project Manager - Retail Fit Out (UK Nationwide)

We are a leading interior fit out contractor renowned for delivering high-quality retail, commercial, and office fit out projects across the UK. We are seeking a skilled Mechanical Project Manager to join our team, overseeing the mechanical aspects of our retail banking estate projects, including capital works and reactive/planned maintenance.

Role Overview

The Mechanical Project Manager will take full ownership of the mechanical lifecycle for retail fit out projects, ensuring seamless delivery through strategic planning, stakeholder coordination, and robust supply chain management. This role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and a client-focused approach to deliver projects on time, within budget, and to the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • End-to-End Oversight: Manage all mechanical activities (HVAC, plumbing, ventilation) across retail banking estate projects, coordinating with clients, design consultants, internal teams, and the supply chain to meet project specifications.
  • Team Leadership & Workload Allocation: Allocate tasks effectively across internal project managers and external subcontractors, ensuring optimal resource use and timely project delivery. Lead project meetings and progress reviews with clients and stakeholders.
  • Supply Chain Ownership: Oversee the mechanical supply chain, ensuring subcontractor performance, commercial alignment, technical compliance, and adherence to safety standards.
  • Client Relationship & Confidence: Serve as the primary point of contact for clients' property and FM teams, building trust through proactive communication, technical expertise, and consistent project delivery.
  • Programme & Time Management: Develop and maintain project schedules to meet client expectations and operational needs, ensuring timely completion of all works.
  • Problem Solving & Solutions Delivery: Address site, technical, or compliance issues swiftly with a solutions-focused approach, minimising disruption to business operations.
  • Governance & Compliance: Ensure all works comply with statutory regulations, CDM, health and safety standards, and internal governance, collaborating with H&S teams as needed.
  • Performance Reporting: Monitor and report on project performance, financials, progress, and risks, providing clear visibility to both contractor and client stakeholders.
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities to enhance efficiency, system reliability, and client satisfaction through innovative practices and industry best standards.
  • Post-Completion & Handover: Oversee smooth project handover, ensuring all deliverables meet client requirements and post-completion processes are completed effectively.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years of project management experience in the fit out or construction industry, with a focus on mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, ventilation).
  • Strong understanding of the UK fit out market, building regulations, and health and safety standards.
  • Proven experience managing retail, commercial, or office fit out projects, with retail banking experience highly desirable.
  • Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • Exceptional leadership and communication skills, with the ability to manage diverse teams and engage with clients effectively.
  • Strong financial acumen, with experience managing project budgets and costs.
  • Proficiency in project management tools (e.g., MS Project, Primavera, Procore) and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Familiarity with BIM, Revit, AutoCAD, or Trimble, and knowledge of sustainable building practices (e.g., BREEAM, LEED).
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Prince2, PMP, RICS) are a plus.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meeting deadlines under pressure.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making skills, with a proactive approach to risk management.
  • Willingness to travel nationwide to support project delivery.
