Brixton's Windmill is a historic monument and community centre. Seeking a Vice Chair with a passion for local heritage to support the Chair and deputise in their absence and to focus on supporting and developing our membership base.

As a trustee, you will have a real opportunity to

  • To make a significant impact on the growth and success of the Friends of Brixton Windmill Gardens and save the Windmill for future generations.
  • Work with an experienced and passionate team of trustees, staff, and volunteers.

What are we looking for?

Desired Skills & Experience

  • Experience in a leadership or governance role within a charity or nonprofit organisation preferable.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to build relationships across a range of stakeholders, including members, donors, and the wider community.
  • Experience in strategic planning, project management, and/or membership growth initiatives.
  • A collaborative, approachable, and flexible leadership style, with the ability to work effectively with both Board members and staff.
  • Passion for the Friends of Brixton Windmill Gardens mission and a commitment to the success and growth of the organisation.

What will you be doing?

  • Governance & Strategic Support
  • Support the Chair in leading the Board of Trustees and ensuring the charity's overall governance meets legal, financial, and operational requirements.
  • Step into the role of Chair in their absence, ensuring continuity of leadership and decision-making.
  • Act as a sounding board for the Chair, providing advice and support on strategic initiatives and key organisational decisions.
  • Represent the charity at external meetings, events, and in media opportunities, as required.
  • Membership Coordination & Engagement
  • Lead the development and implementation of a strategic membership plan, ensuring it aligns with the charity's goals and values.
  • Oversee the recruitment, retention, and engagement of members.
  • Ensure members are kept informed through regular communication, including newsletters, updates, and events.
  • Collaborate with other trustees and staff to ensure membership is effectively integrated into the charity's operations and activities.
