Description

n-Space is a new space for interdisciplinary experimentation across art and technology, led by Somerset House Studios in partnership with UAL's Creative Computing Institute (CCI), Goldsmiths Computing, and Abandon Normal Devices x SODA (Manchester School of Digital Arts), and made possible with funding from The Rothschild Foundation. Conceived as a cross-sector research and development initiative, it will host two rounds of 18-month fellowships alongside public programmes, connecting research themes and ideas with audiences.

Somerset House Studios are seeking an independent evaluator to work with us throughout our 3-year n-Space pilot project to:

  • Develop an innovation-oriented evaluation framework that captures how n-Space enables knowledge exchange and production across art, technology, and society.
  • Produce evidence that makes a compelling case for the value of n-Space, supporting future funding applications and demonstrating relevance to wider sector audiences.
  • Capture learning and actionable recommendations from n-Space to inform its future development, strengthen its approach, and support adaptation to emerging insights.

Key Responsibilities

The freelance evaluator will:

  • Provide an evaluation framework for data gathering and evaluating impact and innovation.
  • Engage with Somerset House Studios and partners, particularly n-Space Curator (Arts & Technology) Dr Linda Rocco, at agreed milestones across the two 18-month fellowship rounds (not embedded in day-to-day delivery).
  • Analyse data provided by the team and partners, interpreting findings in relation to impact and innovation, as well as secondary data (policy documents, sector reports, programme documentation, relevant academic literature, etc)
  • Deliver an interim report highlighting key insights and findings, while identifying future directions and improvements for the second fellowship round.
  • Deliver a final report at the end of the two fellowships rounds, that is clear, accessible, and persuasive in making the case for continued investment in n-Space.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Proven experience in evaluation of complex, multi-partner or cross-sector programmes within the arts, cultural, or innovation sectors.
  • Strong understanding of interdisciplinary practice, particularly at the intersection of art, technology, academia, and industry.
  • Experience in designing and implementing evaluation frameworks that capture systems-level or developmental change, innovation pathways, and cross-sector impact.
  • Ability to synthesise and interpret diverse data sources, both quantitative and qualitative, to produce clear, insightful, and persuasive reports.
  • Excellent written communication skills, including experience producing high-quality reports for funders, policymakers, and sector stakeholders.
  • Independent and self-directed approach, able to manage a long-term freelance contract with multiple milestones.
