Head of Building Control

As a Head of Building Control, you will lead a high-performing service that ensures the safety, quality, and compliance of buildings across our borough. You'll provide strategic direction, operational oversight, and professional leadership to deliver a modern, customer-focused Building Control function that supports both residents and the development community.
This is a key leadership role where you'll manage a dedicated team of surveyors and technical staff, oversee regulatory compliance, and work collaboratively with developers, architects, and internal partners to support growth and regeneration in the borough. You'll also represent the Council at regional and national forums, ensuring we remain at the forefront of legislative change and best practice.
Key Responsibilities may include:
- Lead, manage, and develop the Building Control service, ensuring compliance with all statutory and regulatory requirements.
- Provide professional advice to elected members, senior officers, and external partners on all matters relating to building standards and safety.
- Drive service improvement, efficiency, and innovation, including the use of digital tools and data-led decision making.
- Ensure the delivery of a customer-focused service that promotes high-quality, safe, and sustainable construction.
- Oversee enforcement activity and manage complex cases, including dangerous structures and major developments.
- Lead on the Council's response to the Building Safety Act and related reforms.
Qualifications:
- HND/C or BSc in Building or equivalent discipline
- Demonstrable post-qualification experience in building surveying
- Evidence of Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
Skills & Experience required:
- An experienced and qualified Building Control professional (MRICS, MCABE, or equivalent), with a strong technical background and proven management experience.
- Able to lead teams, influence stakeholders, and drive continuous improvement.
- In-depth knowledge of building regulations and related legislation.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
- The ability to balance commercial awareness with public sector values.
- Experience in managing budgets and performance in a regulatory environment.
- A passion for safety, quality, and public service excellence.
Job Type: Temp to perm
Contract length: 6 months
Pay: £450.00-£500.00 per day
