Cleaning Operative

Job Introduction

East Durham College is seeking a reliable and professional Cleaning Operative to join our Estates team at the Houghall Campus. You'll play a vital role in ensuring our teaching, learning, and working environments are maintained to the highest standards of cleanliness and safety.

This is a hands-on role where your work directly contributes to creating a welcoming, safe, and inspiring environment for students, staff, and visitors.

• Clean and maintain classrooms, corridors, staircases, toilets, changing rooms, kitchenettes, and communal areas.
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, and machine floors; dust and wipe furniture, fixtures, and equipment.
• Empty refuse and recycling bins and transport waste to disposal areas.
• Replenish washroom supplies (soap, hand towels, toilet rolls).
• Undertake specialist cleaning tasks such as carpet and upholstery cleaning, window washing, and scrubbing floors.
• Follow health and safety procedures, including safe use of cleaning chemicals and equipment.
• Provide excellent customer service to staff, students, and visitors.

• Experience: Recent and relevant cleaning experience, ideally in public buildings.
• Skills: Knowledge of health & safety, COSHH, and safeguarding requirements.
• Attributes: Reliability, professionalism, excellent timekeeping, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team.
• Qualifications (desirable): GCSEs in Maths & English, NVQ in Cleaning & Support Services, First Aid Certificate.
• Other: Flexibility to meet changing needs; suitability to work with children and vulnerable adults.
