Director of Hockey

Job Summary
Brighton College is seeking to appoint a Director of Hockey to start in April or September 2026.
The Department
Brighton College is firmly established as one of the top sports schools in the country, with multiple teams and individuals enjoying national and international success. This sporting success is rooted in world-class facilities, in the newly-built School of Science and Sport, and outstanding teaching and coaching. This role offers a rare opportunity to be part of an exciting chapter in the school's sporting history, with recent national success such as: Tier 1 Hockey Championship semi-finalists, Indoor Hockey National runners-up, National Rosslyn Park Rugby 7s winners, National Rugby 10s winners, National Netball finalists, National Swimming titles, National Fencing titles, numerous international Athletics vests, and Sussex County Cricket Champions.
Role Specification
Hockey is one of the College's largest and most successful sports; a core sport for girls in the Michaelmas term, we regularly field 15 teams in weekend fixtures, and have enjoyed great successes in regional and national competitions in recent years. We provide a two-term programme for the 1st XI squad as well as a very popular indoor hockey offering to all age groups where the College's team have had regional and national success in recent years. Coaching is led by the sports department with the support of Common Room staff who offer a vast wealth of experience.
In recent years, seven girls have been selected for a national age-group squad. This has included two girls who have been a part of the England U21 Junior World Cup squads. We also have a number of girls currently part of the East Grinstead Talent Academy. We are ambitious to grow and increase this number during the coming years.
The successful candidate will have a proven track record of outstanding teaching and /or hockey coaching, and in particular, a track record in developing players and bringing out the best in individuals and teams. They will have strong interpersonal and organisational skills and be a skilful motivator of pupils and colleagues, demonstrating the ability to work with pupils at all levels and a willingness to support and guide less experienced, but enthusiastic, coaches or academic staff involved in the Games programme. The successful applicant will lead and develop the girls' hockey programme, coordinating the work of staff in charge of individual teams, and contributing to the provision for and involvement of girls within the games programme. Alongside this, the successful applicant will ideally also contribute to other core sports programmes.
The role offers the successful candidate the chance to join an intellectually invigorating, vibrant and supportive school community in which excellence is framed by strong values and a commitment to others.
The post would suit either an experienced teacher with a background in playing and coaching hockey to a high level, or someone with an impressive record as a hockey coach who is looking to develop their experience within a school environment. We have an established teacher training pathway for those who are interested in gaining a professional teaching qualification, for example, if switching careers.
All teachers at Brighton College are expected to contribute to the school's pastoral system, as a tutor in one of our 16 Houses (of which six are boarding houses and ten are day). There is also an expectation that all teachers will contribute to the broader co-curricular life of the school. Candidates are encouraged to point to interests and enthusiasms as part of their application.
All teachers joining Brighton will have the benefit of guidance by an experienced mentor, and we are proud of the collaborative and supportive Common Room, as well as of the significant continuous professional development available to all.
Academic Teaching is desirable, but not essential. The successful candidate would potentially teach a small number of academic lessons across the 11-18 age range. Applications from all subject disciplines are invited, including Sports Science. We would hope to see a strong academic record, including a good degree from an established university.
