At City College Plymouth, one of the country's largest providers of quality education and training, we are going through a period of transition to enable us to propel education into the future. We pride ourselves on delivering a learning environment and organisational culture that impact positively on the health, wellbeing and sustainability of our community and enables all our students and staff to achieve their full potential.

The Role

We are seeking an inspiring and knowledgeable Lecturer in Engineering to join our expanding DEC teaching team. This role is essential in supporting the College's growing engineering provision, delivering high-quality classroom and workshop learning to full-time students and apprentices.

With student numbers increasing and curriculum demand widening, this post ensures we have the capacity, flexibility and resilience needed to deliver a consistent, high-quality learner experience across the academic year.

We welcome applicants with experience in mechanical, electrical, design, manufacturing or multi-discipline engineering. This role also enhances our ability to provide cover for staff absence, ensuring continuity for learners and stability across the curriculum team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver engaging, inclusive lessons that bring engineering principles and practical skills to life.
  • Teach across a variety of programmes, including full-time study programmes and apprenticeship pathways.
  • Maintain accurate records of student progress, assessment and attendance.
  • Develop high-quality teaching materials aligned to industry standards and emerging engineering technologies.
  • Support learners in both theory and practical workshop environments, ensuring safety and industry relevance.
  • Collaborate effectively with curriculum area managers, colleagues and employer partners to ensure smooth curriculum delivery.
  • Provide cover when required to maintain consistency of teaching and avoid disruption to students' learning.

What You Will Bring

  • A strong engineering background-mechanical, electrical, design, manufacturing or multi-discipline.
  • Confidence in teaching across both workshop and classroom environments.
  • Excellent communication and organisational skills, with a learner-centred approach.
  • Flexibility, resilience and a willingness to contribute across a large, busy curriculum team.
  • A passion for helping students develop their skills, confidence and industry readiness.
  • We welcome applications from experienced lecturers as well as industry professionals looking to move into teaching. Support to gain teaching qualifications is available.

What Will You Bring to the Role

  • Coping: Able to manage pressure and adapt to challenging situations with resilience and professionalism.
  • Adapting: Demonstrates flexibility in teaching approaches and is comfortable adjusting to curriculum changes or learner needs.
  • Creating: Brings creativity to lesson planning, problem-solving and innovative teaching approaches.
  • Delivering: Takes ownership of student success, sets high standards and maintains a strong sense of purpose.

Benefits

City College Plymouth will offer you;

  • 50 Days Annual Leave inclusive of Bank Holidays and College Closure Days.
  • Career development opportunities.
  • Generous pension contributions.
  • Access to discounts at UK attractions, restaurants, travel and theatre.

How we recruit

We aim to recruit based on potential, not experience. We are interested in seeing your behaviours in action and how they will help you become successful at City College Plymouth, giving everyone the opportunity to show their potential, regardless of background or experience.

After completing our online application form, you will be asked to complete an online assessment within a few days of this Vacancy closing. This assessment asks you no questions at all. Instead, it observes your behaviour and natural strengths in action, with a series of engaging, intuitive tasks. You will receive a report outlining your behaviours once you have completed the assessment, regardless of whether you progress to the next stage or not, providing you with some feedback.

The College welcomes applications from service leavers and the Armed Forces community, and supports those service leavers who are Reservists in any of the Armed Forces.

The College reserves the right to close this advertisement early if sufficient applications have been received.
