You will be responsible for the testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting of high voltage (HV) electrical systems, ensuring their safe and efficient function and readiness for operational service. This is an exciting opportunity for an individual with strong technical expertise, a safety-first mindset, and a passion for working with high voltage systems in a variety of settings such as substations throughout the UK.What you'll be doingCommissioning & Testing: Lead the commissioning of high voltage electrical equipment and systems (up to 400kV and beyond), including transformers, switchgear, protection relays, cables, and substation auxiliary equipment.Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve technical issues related to HV systems, ensuring timely rectification within budget.Documentation: Prepare and maintain commissioning reports, test results, technical documentation, risk assessments/method statements.Standards Compliance: Ensure that all systems meet relevant design, technical and safety standards.Collaboration: Work closely with both client and internal design/commissioning engineers, project managers and site teams to ensure successful project delivery.Safety Focus: Adhere to and promote strict health & safety, and environmental protocols during all operations, including CDM and clients Safety Rules.Who we"re looking forEducation: Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering preferred, HNC in electrical engineering being the minimum requirement.Experience: Minimum 5 years of demonstrable experience in commissioning high voltage equipment and systems (including up to 400kV).Technical Knowledge: Demonstrable experience on:Power transformersCurrent/voltage transformersCircuit breakers, disconnectorsLVAC board/Diesel Generator schemesSubstation Control SystemsProtection and Control SystemsPractical Experience InCommissioning Switching ProgrammesMultiple relay application and test softwareOmicron CMC softwarePrimary/secondary injection testingCertifications: National Grid TP141 would be highly desirable along with SSE and National Grid operational authorisations.Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills in high-pressure environments.Travel: Willingness to travel to various project sites around the UK as required.Why work for usCompetitive salary + bonus opportunities25 days’ annual leave + bank holidaysUp to 7% employer pension contributionProfessional fees paid + clear chartership pathwaysSmart working with up to 40% remote flexibilityLife assurance, EAP, and family-friendly policiesTraining & development with access to industry-leading tools and qualificationsOpportunities to make a difference through volunteering and sustainability initiativesAbout UsBalfour Beatty’s Power Transmission & Distribution teams work with regional, national and international electricity network owners and operators to provide technical engineering solutions across the full spectrum of the electricity grid, including overhead lines, cabling, substations and distribution networks.
