A welcoming and forward-thinking specialist school in Durham is looking for a dedicated 1:1 SEMH Behaviour Assistant to support a pupil with significant social, emotional and mental health needs.This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who is calm, resilient and passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to learning.The RoleYou will work on a one-to-one basis with a student who requires consistent emotional support, firm boundaries and personalised behaviour strategies. Your role will involve:Supporting the pupil to regulate emotions and manage challenging behaviourUsing de-escalation techniques and a trauma-informed approachEncouraging engagement in learning through patience, praise and structureBuilding a trusting, stable relationship with the young personAssisting the class teacher with tailored learning activitiesMonitoring behaviour triggers and contributing to behaviour plansPromoting a safe, positive and inclusive environment at all timesAbout the StudentThe pupil may experience:High levels of anxietyDifficulty with social situations and classroom expectationsLow self-esteem or confidenceOutbursts or withdrawal depending on the dayA need for consistent routines and supportive adultsYour role is to provide stability, encouragement and a sense of safety that enables them to stay in class, access learning and build coping strategies.What We’re Looking ForExperience supporting children or young people with behaviour or SEMH needsStrong communication and relationship-building skillsA calm, nurturing and consistent approachConfidence in de-escalation and positive behaviour supportThe resilience to manage challenging behaviour professionally and safelyCommitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil welfareA DBS on the update service or willingness to applyBackgrounds in support work, youth work, mentoring, care, sports coaching or similar roles are highly valued.Why This School?A highly supportive behaviour and pastoral teamClear systems, routines and training for new staffA therapeutic, pupil-centred ethosOpportunities for professional development in SEMH, behaviour and SENDThe chance to make a tangible difference to one young person’s life every dayHow to ApplyIf you are passionate about supporting pupils with SEMH needs and want to be a consistent, positive role model, we’d love to hear from you.All applicants will require the appropriate qualifications and training for this role.
