Position Engineer – Thermofluid Analysis – Rolls‑Royce SMR Location & Working Hybrid working – Primary site is Derby, Manchester or Warrington. Salary £40,000 – £52,500 DOE. About the role We are Rolls‑Royce SMR, working on a pioneering nuclear plant. The Performance & Analysis team leads the engineering analysis that substantiates the performance and safety of the power station. As a Thermo‑fluid engineer you will develop analysis methods, models and tools to investigate fluid systems under normal and fault conditions, working with design, performance and safety teams to ensure the final design meets all requirements. Key responsibilities Build and analyse 1D representations of fluid systems, including architecture, pipework, components and control philosophy (mostly liquid, some gaseous). Scope analysis requirements to demonstrate a system meets its performance and safety requirements. Use analysis for sizing key components to achieve system requirements (pumps, valves, tanks, heat exchangers). Apply knowledge of thermo‑fluid behaviour and system design principles to propose design/control modifications to meet performance/safety objectives. Author analysis reports summarising key results for system performance including pressure drop, NPSHa, control philosophy, cavitation margin, thermal performance. Support higher‑fidelity 2D/3D analysis where required and contribute to CFD analysis delivery within the group. Key selection criteria Strong understanding of applied fluid mechanics and heat‑transfer principles. Experience with 1D fluid systems analysis using tools such as Flomaster or equivalent methods. Knowledge of fluid system design principles, including control philosophy, flow balancing, NPSH and system resistance curves. Familiarity with geometry pre/post‑processing tools (Navisworks, NX) and scripting in MATLAB or Python. Proven ability to develop analysis methods and technical approaches to support design and safety cases. Experience reviewing and technically checking thermo‑fluid analysis for high‑assurance applications. Skilled in verification and validation of analysis models, including benchmarking and uncertainty quantification. Track record of delivering analysis tasks on time, cost and quality, with strong communication and leadership skills. Typically you will have a degree‑level qualification in an engineering discipline and be recognised through an appropriate professional body, or be working towards achieving this.
