Engineer - Thermofluid Analysis page is loaded## Engineer - Thermofluid Analysislocations: Derby, UKtime type: Full timeposted on: Posted Todaytime left to apply: End Date: December 19, 2025 (17 days left to apply)job requisition id: JR100369**Role Title: Engineer – Thermofluid Analysis****Locations: Hybrid working with one of the following locations as your primary site: Derby, Manchester or Warrington.****We anticipate paying a salary between £40,000-£52,500 DOE.**We are Rolls-Royce SMR and we're doing something that's never been done before. We're revolutionising an industry. That's a once-in-a-career opportunity for those excited by such a challenge. This is more than just a job; this is a legacy. The Performance & Analysis team is the centre of excellence within Rolls-Royce SMR (RR SMR) for the engineering analysis used to substantiate the performance and safety of the power station. Thermo-fluid analysis is a key tool for supporting the design and development of the RR SMR as we support the design, assessment and substantiation of both duty and safety systems using a 1D fluid systems analysis approach.About the role: Thermo-fluid engineers are responsible for the technical and programme delivery of work packages which develop analysis methods, models and tools to investigate the performance of fluid systems in a range of normal and faulted operating conditions. The role will involve working alongside the design, performance and safety teams to determine suitable analysis requirements and scope of 1D fluid analysis packages to support progressive design, but ultimately verify the performance and safety of the final RR SMR design. Some of the key responsibilities and scenarios a thermo-fluid engineer would support are:* Build and analyse 1D representations of fluid systems, including system architecture, pipework, components and control philosophy (mostly liquid, but some gaseous systems)* Scoping of analysis requirements to demonstrate a system meets its performance and safety requirements* Use analysis for sizing key components to achieve system requirements (i.e., pumps, valves, tanks, HX etc.)* Apply knowledge of thermo-fluid behaviour and system design principles to propose design/control modifications to meet system performance/safety requirements* Author analysis reports which summarise key results for system performance including pressure drop, NPSHa, control philosophy, cavitation margin, thermal performance* In some scenarios, a higher fidelity 2D/3D analysis approach may be required and there may be opportunities to support the delivery of Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis within the groupThe role includes contributing to the development of the wider fluid systems analysis methodology by applying Verification, Validation and Uncertainty Quantification (VVUQ) techniques, thereby demonstrating the adequacy of the analysis they are responsible for. More experienced engineers may also be responsible for the technical supervision of small teams or junior engineers.Due to the safety-critical nature of the modelling we undertake, excellent quality-management processes and code VVUQ are essential. The development of robust and automated analysis routes around the analysis codes, including clear documentation of model inputs/outputs and any additional pre/post-processing of data is an important aspect of this. The thermo-fluid analysis group collaborates closely with system design engineers and safety measure owners, which provides opportunities to use analysis not only to substantiate performance, but influence the design and operating philosophies of the systems we analyse to improve their operation. As we strive to find the best fit for this position, we are seeking individuals with a minimum level of experience, training, and qualification. But we'll let you in on a secret: there's no such thing as the ‘perfect' candidate. If you feel you meet 75% of the requirements for this role, we would love to hear from you.Key selection criteria for this role are:* Strong understanding of applied fluid mechanics and heat transfer principles.* Experience with 1D fluid systems analysis using tools like Flomaster or equivalent techniques (e.g., hand calculations, empirical correlations).* Knowledge of fluid system design principles, including control philosophy, flow balancing, NPSH, and system resistance curves.* Familiarity with geometry pre/post-processing tools (Navisworks, NX) and scripting (MATLAB, Python).* Proven ability to develop analysis methods and technical approaches to support design and safety cases.* Experience in reviewing and technically checking thermo-fluid analysis for high-assurance applications.* Skilled in verification and validation of analysis models, including benchmarking and uncertainty quantification.* Track record of delivering analysis tasks to time, cost, and quality, with strong communication and leadership skills.Typically you will have a degree level qualification an engineering discipline & be recognised through an appropriate professional body, or be working towards achieving this.We welcome applications for a broad range of industries, with nuclear experience not being essential for this role.Salary and Package:* We anticipate paying a salary of between £40,000-£52,500 DOE* Bonus - Performance related target opportunity 12.5%* Benefits Allowance – £2,200 per annum, enabling you to create a bespoke package* Pension - 12% employer and 6% employee contributions.* Holidays - 28 days holiday (+ public holidays) and the ability to buy or sell up to 4 days.* Private Medical Insurance - BUPA single cover health care* Life Assurance - 6x pensionable pay* £250 - One-off payment for new starters for home office purchasesYou’ll be joining a forward-thinking organisation that values transparency, fairness, and innovation.
