Job Summary: WWL invites applications for a busy, forward‑thinking Consultant capable of leading Acute Medicine and Critical Care services across the Trust. The role supports emergency and critical care delivery in the Emergency Department, Medical Assessment Unit, and Intensive Care Unit. Key details: Date posted: 03 December 2025 Grade: Consultant (Consultant Intensivist / Acute Physician) Salary: £105,504 to £139,882 a year (pro rata) Contract: Permanent Working pattern: Full‑time, flexible with on‑call rota Reference number: 302-25-7645756MHR-S Location: Royal Albert Edward Infirmary, Wigan, WN1 2NN Job Responsibilities Provide clinical care as a Consultant Intensivist / Acute Physician across the Emergency Floor and Intensive Care Unit. Review and manage patients in assessment wards (MAU & Lowton), acute medical take (A&E), and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC). Participate in the ICU on‑call rota (currently 1:8) with a 5% on‑call supplement. Lead morning ward rounds and oversee patient reviews with junior doctors. Provide senior cover for the SDEC area, coordinating GP referrals to an organised clinic setting. Support the general physicians during overnight and weekend on‑call rosters. Collaborate with gastroenterology and cardiology in‑reach teams for daily review of complex patients. Receive and coordinate specialist nurse support in oncology, alcohol, respiratory, cardiology, diabetes, and palliative care. Assist social support through the Access to Community Service Team (ACST) and Hospital at Home programmes. Qualifications and Training (Essential) Full registration with the GMC and a valid license to practice. FFICM or EDIC & MRCP or equivalent. Entry onto the specialist register in ICM & GIM or eligibility within 6 months. Possession of or eligibility for Fellowship / Associate Fellowship of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine. Eligibility for inclusion on the Specialist Registers. Qualifications and Training (Desirable) Membership of professional societies. A higher degree – Masters or PhD. Formal leadership qualification. Knowledge, Experience & Skills (Essential) Practical experience in management of critical care patients. Previous appointments providing professional training in Intensive Care Medicine & Acute Medicine. Evidence of audit and quality improvement initiatives. Understanding of the responsibilities of a Consultant. Teamworking skills with medical, non‑medical, and cross‑department colleagues. Leadership and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of NHS management structure. Commitment to ongoing professional development. Proactive and self‑motivated attitude. Knowledge, Experience & Skills (Desirable) Skills in echocardiography and ultrasound (FICE or FAMUS accreditation). Attendance at professional meetings and courses. IT and computing skills. Attendance at leadership courses. Evidence of publications. Research, Teaching and Development (Essential) Demonstrable interest in research and Good Clinical Practice. Commitment to teaching, clinical supervision, and training of junior staff and students. Additional Attributes (Essential) Committed to high‑quality patient care.
