Job summary An exciting opportunity has risen for a Band 5 Staff Nurse to come and join our Endocrine team at Guy's and St Thomas' hospital. We are looking for a staff nurse to join the endocrine specialist nurse team. The successful candidate will be responsible for arranging, undertaking and presenting results of the dynamic endocrine tests, supported by the nursing assistant and Deputy CNS. Patient education and the administration of endocrine treatments are also a key component of this role. Main duties of the job The post holder will be responsible for contact with current out patients who may require input from the Diabetes and Endocrine team. Ensuring the safety and well being of services users, and always working in a manner that promotes dignity and human rights through the adoption of person centred care principles. Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care. This includes pre‑assessing patients preparing them for consultation, administering medication including IV and blood product. Take charge of a clinical area and independently manage a workload, support and assess nursing assistants and student nurses, carry out audit and report back to Clinical Lead and Matron. Be responsible for assessing and recognising emergencies in the speciality. To interpret information and take appropriate action and to lead others to do the same. Demonstrate appropriate practice and specialist advice in assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care, including history taking, physical examination and requesting diagnostic procedures. Ensure correct administration of prescribed medication, including transfusion of blood and blood products. Be responsible for recognizing and managing emergencies in the speciality, interpreting information and taking appropriate action while leading others. Act as an advocate for patients, ensuring a patient‑oriented approach and meeting NHS Plan and other guideline standards. Provide high‑quality clinical care and a good patient experience, respecting customs, religious beliefs and doctrines. Identify and mitigate situations detrimental to patient and staff well‑being. Provide leadership, support and guidance to staff in planning, delivering and evaluating individualized care. Maintain accountability in line with the NMC code of professional conduct, continually improving knowledge and competence. Ensure safe and effective care for complex patients requiring advanced skills and perform specialist nursing procedures. Maintain a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. Store sensitive patient records appropriately and ensure confidentiality. Recognize and accommodate cultural and spiritual needs of patients. Support patients and carers in making informed decisions regarding treatment and management. Participate in case conferences and coordinate ongoing care. Ensure staff minimize cross‑infection risk and dispose of body fluids safely. Provide support during delivery of bad news, caring for terminally ill patients and at death. Assess educational needs of patients and families, developing plans to meet those needs. Communicate effectively with patients, carers and families about disease, treatment and management. Promote evidence‑based practice, assist in developing the specialist service and meet clinical standards. Provide seamless care from referral through assessment, diagnosis, treatment and review. Facilitate cost‑effective specialist service through audit and quality initiatives agreed by the Trust. Lead and participate in key developments to promote high‑quality patient‑focused services. Enhance interface between staff, patients, community staff and visitors. Develop and use information systems for regular audit, quarterly incidence reporting and annual activity analysis. Attend and participate in multi‑professional team meetings. Set, monitor and review standards of care, initiating corrective action plans when needed. Identify unsafe situations and report them to the matron.
