Closing date: 14 December 2025 Interview date: Monday 12 January 2026 Rehabilitation engineering is the clinical application of engineering science and principles to develop technological solutions and devices. The Regional Technical Aids Service (RTAS) provides bespoke design, modification, manufacture and consultancy services for mechanical, electrical, electronic, specialist IT and communication assistive technologies. RTAS engineers / technologists work with therapists and other health, social care and medical professionals across the region, in both clinical and community settings, to improve the lives of people living with disabilities, enabling them to remain in their own homes and realise their full potential in terms of independence, education, employment and social participation. Main duties of the job We are seeking a suitably qualified, capable and motivated clinical engineer to support the delivery of our services, including initial assessment of referral requirements, problem solving, risk analysis, design, manufacture and documentation. The post holder will also: Lead the development of the service quality management system in accordance with applicable standards and the Medical Device Regulation. Coordinate quality assurance, audit and clinical governance activities, and deliver associated training to colleagues and other healthcare professionals. Play a key role in the wider Rehabilitation Engineering and Aids for Living unit. The successful applicant will be registered or working towards registration as a Clinical Scientist, have an engineering or science‑based degree (preferably with a related Master’s degree) or equivalent specialist knowledge and experience of engineering design, materials, manufacturing and regulatory compliance. This is a patient‑facing role that requires excellent technical awareness, communication, planning, organisational and interpersonal skills. A full UK driving licence is essential; regionwide travel is required. Job responsibilities Contribute to service delivery across the region within specialty area. Provide professional technical leadership within specialty area. Support service improvement and execution of clinical and organisational strategies via the quality management system. Perform a range of advanced healthcare science activities. Offer specialist advice and training to staff and other professionals. Participate in research and development projects. Contribute to staff development, supervise and train less experienced staff and trainees. Qualifications & Education First or second‑class honours degree in relevant science or engineering. Post‑graduate degree at master’s level or equivalent specialist knowledge. Registered as a Clinical Scientist or working towards registration. Full, valid driving licence. Higher degree in a relevant subject. Knowledge & Experience In‑depth specialist knowledge of applying physical and engineering sciences to medicine. Specialised knowledge of medical or scientific equipment and clinical procedures. Knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology relevant to the work area. Understanding of Medical Devices Regulations, relevant legislation, standards and safety principles. Knowledge of clinical audit and governance, including ethical and regulatory considerations. Proven problem‑solving ability. Experience with rehabilitation engineering and services of the REAL unit. Experience working within quality management systems, audit and quality assurance. Familiarity with NHS funding, commissioning and contracting processes. Experience investigating adverse incidents in healthcare services. Experience in training and supervising trainees. Skills & Abilities Excellent patient and interpersonal communication skills. Good time management and organisational skills. Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines and maintain technical services. Proficient IT skills, including use of databases and office software. Ability to work both within multidisciplinary teams and independently, managing personal workloads. Research and development skills within a team context. Highly developed physical skills for safe and efficient equipment operation. Teaching, training and mentoring skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent report writing and presentation skills, including scientific papers and conference presentations.
