EMBLs Science Education and Public Engagement (SEPE) office leads and coordinates the institutes science education programmes and public engagement efforts. Our activities are aimed at European school science teachers, young learners of all backgrounds aged between 10 and 19 years, and diverse public audiences. SEPE also offers support and training to EMBL scientists who have an interest in public engagement. SEPE is part of EMBLs International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT).
EMBL is seeking a proactive and enthusiastic Public Engagement Officer to join EMBLs Science Education and Public Engagement team. The ideal candidate will have experience in community-focused public engagement, be familiar with culture change initiatives, and have the ability to deliver individual and team projects.
This role supports the delivery and development of

strategically-aligned

public engagement at EMBL-EBI, Hinxton. There is a strong foundation for public engagement within EMBL-EBI but you will have the opportunity to build upon this and further shape and develop the work inline with SEPEs overall mission and strategic goals.
This is a hybrid role with a requirement to be office-based one day a week with occasional travel to EMBL, Heidelberg and other EMBL sites.
Your role
Within the scope of this role you will work with current and new community partners and with EMBL-EBI colleagues to create impactful engagement opportunities, at the Wellcome Genome Campus and off-site in community spaces.
You will also contribute to culture change by supporting public engagement training and skills development, reward and recognition initiatives, co-ordinating and chairing the EMBL-EBI Public Engagement Working Group, promoting and managing the internal Primer Fund for public engagement and raising awareness internally of public engagement as a valued activity at EMBL-EBI through co-ordinated internal communications and events.
This is an exciting opportunity to work closely with EMBL-EBI staff and local communities and to be part of a team delivering an EMBL-wide science education and public engagement programme in Europe and beyond.
Responsibilities:
Manage and develop EMBL-EBIs community engagement programme

Increase staff participation in

strategically-aligned

engagement activities

Support the creation of audience-focused engagement activities and resources with EMBL-EBI colleagues

Promote and support staff training and access to engagement opportunities

Collect, analyse and present data pertaining to public engagement activity, enabling us to report effectively

Support EMBL-EBI group leaders to embed public engagement within funding applications

Maintain community partnerships, being alert to additional development opportunities

Ensuring all activities adhere to EMBL and EMBL-EBI policies and procedures e.g. health and safety and safeguarding guidance.

We are looking for a conscientious individual who brings energy and enthusiasm to this role. You should have experience in co-creation and co-production approaches and be confident in your interactions with colleagues and community partners. We hope you will also be well-organised, a self-starter, focused on delivery of the key tasks and with an ability to prioritise. It is essential that you possess excellent attention to detail, good communication skills and that you are comfortable being part of a dispersed team with hybrid management.

Required:
Educated to first degree level

A minimum of two years work experience in the field of public engagement working with communities

A demonstrable interest in promoting public engagement

Ability to understand and simplify complex scientific ideas

Strong interpersonal skills

A team player

Confident and engaging public speaker

Competency with IT programmes, including the Microsoft Office suite

You may also have
Experience working internationally.
Proficient in either Spanish, Italian or French.
Experience of patient or public dialogue projects
