The Department of General Anaesthesia, part of the Division of Surgery, serves four clinical divisions: Surgery, Weston, Specialised Services, and Women & Children. We are recruiting Consultant General Anaesthetists to join the team at Bristol Royal Infirmary. Main Duties The post is based at Bristol Royal Infirmary with one clinical day each week at Weston General Hospital. Responsibilities include adult general anaesthetic services for maxillofacial, ENT, dental, obstetrics, gynaecology, thoracic, upper & lower GI, and ophthalmic surgery, long‑term IV access and pre‑operative assessment. The holder will contribute to out‑of‑hours weekend rota and on‑call rota across both sites. The role is split across Bristol Royal Infirmary, Weston General Hospital, St Michael’s Hospital, Bristol Eye Hospital and South Bristol Community Hospital. Experience Expert clinical opinion on a range of problems, both emergency and elective, including anaesthesia for major upper and lower abdominal surgery, thoracic, head and neck, ECT and obstetric surgery and interventions.Specialist interest in at least one area: major general, advanced airway anaesthesia, perioperative medicine, obstetric anaesthesia.Full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision. Clinical Knowledge & Skills Up‑to‑date knowledge and experience of relevant specialties.Knowledge of NHS priorities and specialty reference.Log‑book evidence of experience in maxillofacial, head and neck, thoracic, oesophagogastric, colorectal, HPB, pre‑operative assessment, obstetrics and pain. Clinical Governance & Audit Understanding of clinical governance responsibilities.Knowledge of audit principles and evidence of participation.Positive evidence‑based practice and CPD participation. Research Knowledge of research principles and involvement in research projects.Peer‑reviewed research publications. Teaching & Training Experience teaching medical students and supervising trainees.Knowledge of multidisciplinary team teaching. Management & Leadership Management training or experience and evidence of learning.Organising efficient specialist services and coping with consultant workload.Independent practice and leadership evidence. Interpersonal, Communication & Team Working Effective communication with patients, relatives, colleagues and staff.Proficient spoken and written English.Effective presentation skills and ability to respond to queries.Ability to develop working relationships across levels and divisions.Flexibility as a team member.
