Job SummaryThe North East Thames Regional Genetics Service is seeking a Registered Genetic Counsellor to join our dynamic multidisciplinary team. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the delivery of high‑quality genetic counselling for patients and families across the NE Thames region.About the RoleYou will provide expert genetic counselling for individuals and families referred to the service across cancer, rare disease and prenatal genetics, delivered through virtual or face‑to‑face appointments across the region. The role will focus primarily on rare‑disease and prenatal genetics.Key duties include:Support patients through complex decision‑making processes, including diagnostic testing, predictive testing, carrier screening and reproductive planning.Collaborate with the wider genetic counselling team, clinical geneticists, administrative staff, laboratory scientists and other healthcare professionals to ensure integrated patient care.Contribute to service development, audit and education initiatives within the department.Actively participate in multidisciplinary meetings and regional collaborations.Qualifications & ExperienceRegistered Genetic Counsellor (AHCS) or equivalent overseas registration with reciprocity agreement. If not registered, appointment on band 7 is possible with expectation to register within 3 years.First degree in a relevant subject; MSc in Genetic Counselling or equivalent training, or graduate nurse/midwife with post‑registration experience and counselling skills training of at least 120 hours and an accredited genetics science course of at least 30 hours.Experience or strong interest in rare disease and/or prenatal genetics.Experience managing an independent caseload and working within a multidisciplinary team.Good organisational, verbal and written communication, problem‑solving and time‑management skills.Ability to travel to clinics across North and East London and Essex as required.Desirable: experience with research, audit, phlebotomy, teaching, and advanced genetics service development.Personal SkillsEmpathetic and able to work autonomously in a fast‑paced clinical environment.Strong communication and active listening skills.Commitment to ongoing professional development and adherence to AGNC code of ethics and GCRAB code of conduct.Familiarity with safeguarding procedures and database/ICT tools.What We OfferProfessional Development – structured CPD, mentorship and conference opportunities.Innovation & Research – opportunities to recruit families to research and contribute to service development.Education & Teaching – involvement in training healthcare professionals and students linked to academic institutions.Supportive Environment – collaborative team culture valuing wellbeing and diversity.Hybrid Working – agreed hybrid working arrangements with the team.Contract & LocationBand 7 – Permanent, Full‑time.
