In this combined role the post holder will spend 3 days a week in the clinical genetics service with an autonomous cancer genetics caseload and 2 days a week with the Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS) Service. Both services are housed within the same department.

Clinical Genetics Service

This role will be within the core cancer genetics team. The post holder will have experience in genetic/genomic counselling and will manage an independent caseload of diagnostic, pre-symptomatic and urgent cancer cases. They will have on-call responsibilities which may include managing urgent cases and being able to answer relevant queries. They will maintain an up-to-date knowledge of the scientific, medical and psychosocial aspects of clinical genetics. The post holder will work alongside other clinicians within the department as well as other healthcare professionals, including mainstream colleagues. The post holder should already hold or be working toward professional registration.
- Provide genetic/genomic counselling using different communication modalities such as in person, virtual and telephone consultations (including preparation and planning for consultation and post clinic follow-up)
- Taking a lead role in diagnostic, predictive, carrier genetic testing
- Will support and work alongside mainstream colleagues in the region
- May have the opportunity to develop specialisms inline with needs of the team
- Ordering genetic tests
- Liaising with other healthcare professionals
- May triage referrals of patients to the service within their area of expertise, using appropriate protocols
- Risk assessment within their area of expertise using appropriate software
- Act as a genetics resource and participate in teachings of genetics to other healthcare professionals / students or patient / public groups
- Contribute to service development, audit and studies
